How does one go about naming a collection?

When is a collection worth naming?

Gosh, I don't know but I can't resist posting what came to mind. You must forgive me Joe.

Spock's extensive collection is surely worth recognition. I propose:

    "The Vulcan Vanities"
This would be better than "vulgarities".

If you have a registry set, you have to choose a name. My set names are very generic (eg "A rainbow Jefferson war nickel set"). However, I did name my regular Jefferson Nickel set "The Atlantic City Set of Jefferson Nickels."

Lehigh - I took Joe to mean something along the lines of the Randall Hoard. What is the threshold to receive special recognition on slabs is what I think he is after.

Lehigh is correct, as far as I know, you have a registry set, then it is put on the slab...

I just name my collection whatever comes to mind, lol. And IMHO, if you like your collection, and are happy how it is turning out, then name it if you want. The only name I have for my collection now is "The Phoenix Collection", but I'll probably come up with some catchier names for different parts of my collection. :)

    Phoenix

To get your own Name on a collection you must have a "registry set" as mentioned..the set must be 100% complete....I am working on this for my notes at PCGS...then it cost's you $10 ea to have everything reslabbed with your name ...

Oh, that was a little unclear from the OP. My guess is that you must have an extremely large collection that you submit for grading or a former or current top ranked registry set.

For example, the Great Falls and Battle Creek collections were just large submissions of toned Morgan Dollars. However, other pedigrees are definitely in recognition of a top tier collection. The Bingham collection comes to my mind immediately for some reason.

This is an appalachian Jefferson that originally resided in the old holder with the "T" designation. I am assuming that NGC reholdered the coin for Mr. Bingham, added the pedigree and the star, and even kept the "T". This is definitely the coolest holder in my collection (two designations and a pedigree). Who says buy the coin not the plastic.

Mine is titled "My collection". :) That is how I refer to it, but time will tell. :)

I only have one coin graded by PCGS and its a dime. I think I named the set Kings coins or something like that. Not concieted or staging a takeover(yet), its just my last name. I'll be letting Spock run things on here 4 now.:kewl:

It was a short lived designation that stood for toning. It was only supposed to be used for coins with attractive toning. Basically, it was the predecessor of the modern day star designation. The coin pictured above is the only such "T" designation that I have ever seen on a recent slab.

I have only one other "T" designation coin and guess what. It is also an appalachian Jefferson Nickel still in it's original holder. Please note that it is an old fattie holder and the font is different. Also take a look at the certification numbers, from the same submission.

I would imagine that there are NGC slab collectors out there that would snatch any of these up as soon as they hit the market. I think the only reason I was able to acquire these two is because I paid moon money for them both.

    Thank You,
    all

especially Lehigh, your comments are insightfull(sp?) ~

I guess you really need to have something happening before you go naming a collection.

No you don't. Now if you mean for the tpg's to name, then probably yes. As far as I am concerned you can name it what ever you want.

There is only one name that should ever be used for a collection. And that is for you to call it - MINE :D
