Hello! I'll start by thanking anyone who cares to comment and state that I'm a complete novice at coin collecting and only came across this coin as I was counting some of my face value 90% junk silver. In looking at my Kennedy Half Dollars, I came across a coin that is unlike any of the others I have. It has a satin like finish and just looks "different". I'm hoping someone here can tell me what I'm looking at. Perhaps a "proof coin"? It almost looks like It's minted out of a different material, as you'll see in the pictures the coin on the right looks odd compared to then one on the left, which is like every other 1964 Kennedy Half Dollars I have. Thank you in advance for your comments and expertise.
I can tell you that you do not have a proof coin. Proof coins typically have a mirror finish. There are some exceptions, like early wheat cents and some buffalo nickels.
I don't think so.. Just Environmental toning. Something shanged the tone but that's a normal business strike 90% silver half. You've never seen silverware or jewelry tarnish?
First, welcome to the neighborhood @Hebron8654 ! It has already been said that it is more likely environmental toning. I'm posting a 1998-S Kennedy with a satin finish which was a special issue that accompanied the RFK Commemorative Silver Dollar. As you can see, yours looks nothing like it. ~ Chris Oops! Corrected - I meant to say RFK Silver Dollar.
Yes, it is! I have two of them, PCGS MS69. The Red Book calls it a matte finish, but I think it is the same thing. The earliest submissions to PCGS were graded "MS", but somewhere along the line, they changed to "SP". I decided to keep them in the original slabs. ~ Chris
I bought 3 sets from the mint. Great looking coins. The price seems to be just going down. They were really hot for a while.
I appreciate everyone's input and willingness to comment. You all sure know your stuff! So, it sounds like this is just a run of the mill 90% silver Kennedy Half Dollar that oddly tarnished differently than the others. Thank you all, I wouldn't have wanted to throw this into the rest of my 90% silver coins if it were something special. Much appreciated.
