Found this medal at a garage sale for $1. Got it for a 1972 half. Alas, not a coin to be found. 79th Anniv. ANA medal STL. Sorry 4 the angle, I was in the way of the light. Also purchased an Engelhard 1oz silver bar for $12 (talked down form $15) 4 silver spoons for $1 -2 spoons for a total 1.4 oz sterling. One of these is the State of Michigan -1 spoon 1.3 oz international silver co. marked BP (MH on top of handle) -1 spoon 1.3 oz International & co. marked XII I am not sure the second 2 spoons are solid silver or plated. Any thoughts, values, info/links on silver markings, how to remove nastyness on rev of medal etc. are appreciated. Thanks 4 looking.
WOW! Noost... what a find. That is awesome. What were you thinking when you saw that? Was the person who was selling it a coin collector? By the sound of it, it looks like someone was in that family.
Thanks. I grabbed the medal from the knick nacks shelf and then sort of ran over to the lady. Got really excited for a min. I told her was looking for other things that go with this. She looked confused, so I asked who the coin collector is. She said it was her grandmothers and they found it in the attic or basement(I don't remember which). She said that there were no coins at all. I wonder what happened to them. She did have a few silver quarters her daughter brought back from the school lunchline, but didn't want to get rid of them. I get to talk to alot of neat people at sales 'cause I always ask if they have any coins. Also try to spark an interest telling of the xtra leaf, missing clad layer etc. U should see how fast the people look through their change as I am walking away. The local consignment shop guy even calls me now. Just called me the other day about a 2headed quarter. Starting to get a name, just need to get some biz cards. BTW this was from 3 different garage sales in 3 different cities.
Thanks for the replies. Is it bad form to clean a medal and how do I do it? The black marks on the rev are not my shodow, it is some kind of toning I would like to remove.
I go to alot of garage sales ,and I always ask if they have any coins I don't care if there foreign coins I look through them for double dies. I have found some double dies getting coins from garage sales. I have to say don;t forget your loupe . :headbang: Jazzcoins Joe:whistle:
Be careful when you do. Garage sales, flea markets, pawn shops and the like are full of problem coins, fake coins, altered coins and harshly cleaned coins. And most of the time, those selling them have no idea. So if you buy at these places, you better know your coins.
Nice finds. As for the spoons if you can't see the word Sterling or numbers 925 anywhere it's probably plated if silver at all. We buy a lot of sterling silverware at work but not plated.
So far I've had some fantastic luck at garage/yard sales. The main thing is to ask. Once, some years ago I asked and the lady there went into the house and came out with a jar of pennies (cents you know). She was barely able to carry it. She said it was destined to go to a bank. I estimated about $30 to $40 worth so I offered $50 due to the bottom full of Indian Head Cents. She wanted me to sit there and count them but I finally convinced her it would take all day so she took the money. At home I found the latest coin was dated in the 50's.
Wow, thanks for the ideas and responses! jazzcoins-Always have my loupe, well almost always. GDJMSP-I've not come across anything that was of a high value -yet, but I will remeber what u have said when I do. clembo-2 are sterling (shop offered me $10 for both(1.4oz), but I declined)and just found out today that the other 2 are plated. Not bad for 25c ea though. Just Carl- I'm pretty sure your post on that sale is the reason I ask now. Thx
Yes I've said this many, many times. You have to ASK. People are just afraid to put out items like guns, coins, stamps, etc. However, if you ask, you may be shocked at what they have and will gladly sell.
