Comments on the toning

I purchased some Silver American Eagles at the end of 2015. As a experiment I put one away. I placed it and a Morgan Dollar behind the printer leaning on the back panel on my computer desk. I removed it last year. Direct sunlight, water, etc. never came near the coins. Here's what they looked like after almost 4 years. I put them in flips last summer and no further changes were seen. The SAE toned more than the Morgan. Comments?

Interesting scientific experiment. I would suspect a few things. One, the ASE is .999 silver while the Morgan is 90% and 10% copper-nickel. Which may explain the dramatic shade difference of an otherwise same color. Two things perhaps explain the toning. Heat from the printer and/or dust particle from the air building up on the surface. A third option might be, are you a smoker?

 

The water spots on the Eagle may suggest an improper rinse which may, or may not, affect the toning. ~ Chris

Meh, nice but no cigar. I think maybe more years would be nice but then again, maybe not. Nice try though!

 

I've never dipped, cleaned, altered, etc. a coin. Possibly the high humidity in the summer in Brooklyn has something to do with it. I never really looked at it all the time it was there. (Maybe once or twice in the time it was back there).IMO the coin is not attractive.

 

They do have a nice golden glow to them.

 

TM, put on your thinking cap! The Mint runs the planchets through a wash/rinse before they go to the coining chamber. Don't be so defensive! ~ Chris

 

Please accept my apology. I thought you meant that I dipped the coin in Acetone, distilled water, or something else. Never thought about the mint doing it.
