IMO, take the time to put together a full set of the silver Roosies (add the clads if you want.) Start with getting all the holes filled, then start doing upgrades until you end up with an MS set. Might even want to include the proofs. I did that for the silver ones and completed the set in MS. I targeted MS-66 so I have a few upgrades to do. How do I know they are MS-66? Every coin is slabbed by PCGS or NGC. That may be too expensive for you. Raw coins should be a lot less expensive.
Well I get what I can from ebay as I have pointed out in my cents thread I live in the UK and US silver coinage is not quite as readily available here as it is in the US LOL also I can't stand slabed coins IMO they are soleless LOL
I missed seeing your location. Yep, being in the UK will make collecting US coins tougher. But then, putting together a George VI set would be easier. I did that from the US years ago. As for slabbed coins, wait until one of your major purchases ends up cleaned or fake. That might make you rethink your position on slabs.
I have quite a nice GB collection and I do prefer circulated coins, I to be honest dont mind a cleaned coin (or holed) as long as it is not totaly scrubbed LOL now as for fakes have you heard of the fake slabs that are out there :kewl: on top of this the expensive stuff (When I get it) I buy from reputable dealers. As a bit of a old hand in the memrobilia markets I have been aware of fakes for years in everyting from Star wars toys to Autographs. Thanks Mark I like em as well LOL
Like I said, I had a George VI collection of not only Britain, but also the Commonwealth countries. Probably pushing 90% complete. Finally decided I had my fingers in too many pies and sold it off. I'll stick to US coins. Besides missing some of the keys (1941 Hong Kong 1 cent, 1941 Sarawak 1 cent, etc.), most of the rest I was missing were various African and Indian mintmarks. My Great Britain set was complete. But the 1945 New Zealand 1 penny burnished was always in question.
LOL thats the problem isnt it were do you draw the line every now and then I see something and go Ooo thats nice next thing I know I have the start of another collection :goof:
I've been working on a set of silver Roosies graded MS66 FT by NGC. I only have 8 out of 48 right now, but so far none of them costed me more than $25! I've found it's a great set to work on. It's pretty inexpensive for the most part, but with 48 coins needed it keeps you searching.
i am glad you dont like slabbed coins send them all my way i still owe you the trip to London. i am passing by end of october but hopefully i will have a visit one of these days
Congrats ont your new pickups, Orc. So for the business struck coins, are you buying them, or salvaging them from pocket change? Just wondering...Mike
I did find one dime in my change and every now and again find coins from Gibralta, they look very much like UK coins Best find though was a Scotish ten pound note that the lady on the till woudnt take as payment so I swapped for it LOL
I can't imagine trying to put a quality FDR set together anywhere outside of the states. I'm having a beast of a time finishing my set. Finding some of the earlier dates with FSB was brutal, but the clads have been next to impossible. I've been working on this set for over a year now and that hasn't been for a lack of funds but for a lack of quality on the clads. I ended biting my lip and spending $20 on an 82 P... Seriously who would spend $20 on a uncertified clad dime?!? The 82 and 83 clads were insanely hard to find. I'm to the point now though that I can see the end of the tunnel. Just need to pick up 3 of the S Proofs, 4 of the S silver proofs, and 6 of the P Proofs. My pick for the most undervalued modern out there is in this series as well. The 82 no mintmark. I've picked up 5 of these over the last year in grades of AU to 64. I have the strong suspicion that you'll soon see this coin added to the Whitman albums.
Picked up a few more for the collection :hail: 2001 d + p 2002 d + p 2003 d + p 2004 d + p 2005 d + p 2006 d + p 2008 d + p All the marks are on the 2x2's the coins themselfs look lovely in my dansco LOL
Lofty goal, but probably manageable. Certainly worth it when completed. I've almost completed the set in -66 (one missing) but only a few FT's. Keep at it. I'm sure you'll get a LOT of enjoyment working on the set.
