I am thinking about writing an application for the iphone/ipod touch for helping manage coin collections. The idea being you would have your records in your pocket, so if you are at a coin show you can see what holes you need to fill/etc.

this is an application that I want, so I suspect others may be interested in it as well.

    thanks!

Hmm..interesting idea. Most of the coin guys that I know are not techophiles. Most can send an email and type coin info into a spreadsheet but I doubt they would have an interest in an iphone.

I have a want list in a word doc and whenever I go coin hunting, I cut and paste it into an email and send it to myself.

If you have the time ..make it. If you build it, they will come. If they don't come.... bummer.

I also think it's an interesting concept. :thumb:

However, instead of making it just for coins, why not make it user adaptable? There are many things that peeps collect, so why not make it user definable so it can be used by more peeps and with it being able to be used by more peeps, you would sell more copies. ;)

    Ribbit :)

I like the idea and would possibly buy a iphone if this were available. If you were able to flip through your coins like you are able to flip through music albums, that would be neat. Go for it!

I'm looking at maybe getting an Iphone---it would be great in my business, but I'm going to wait till the company takes over paying the phone bill :D
A buddy of mine has the new version and said that it is MUCH better than the first Iphone.

Sounds like the only benefit would be access to a blogspot where U could already post your pictures and have access to your data inventory. But then again, I am not familiar with all the other uses of the Ipod/phone. thingy.

Let me think. When I go to a coin show I carry a piece of paper with what I want, need, would like. It's about half a normal sheet of paper size and all info is on only one side. I highly doubt having anything else with a memory of an encylopidia is really necessary. However, if you need something to document all that you own, should be nice.

I love the IDEA of the iphone. (If you've ever used one, you'll know what I mean) But I'm not a big fan of the hardware itself, and I don't like apple. But I voted yes, because if, say, LG came out with a similar device, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

I would like an app like that.I'm on my iPhone right now & am on this forum with my iPhone 70% of the time .

I would never trade this gadget for anything else out there right now.The amount of info I can get on the floor & at the speed it can come to me is priceless. Not to mention a whole lot of fun.

I would, but i wanted to pre-load the application with mintage numbers, maybe varieties. It wold be really geared toward coin collecting.
if i could get sponsorship from the redbook people, or ANA i would love to put an entire grading guide in as well. I can't just take other peoples pics and use them :)

well, unfortunately its not that easy. Most other phones are very closed, its hard to make applications and distribute them. thats the really amazing thing about the iphone. its very close to an "open" platform, and is extremely accessible to developers. Also the development tools are free :)
I am curious to see what happens with google android platform... but thats another thing altogether.

I feel the same way sometimes, even though being connected is my life.
the only thing I like about flying is an excuse to disconnect :)

My ideas for the application would keep it really simple, the idea being it would be helpful.

If it helps you at work , or if you just like being connected , then that's different , I guess I'm getting a little old or have no desire to be connected all the times , but then I guess you could just turn it off .

With an Ipod, Blackberry...any phone with web access has all the capabilities of accessing all the coin inventory programs that are already available on the internet. I'm not sure what kind of program you would be able to write that is downloadable onto these phones that isn't a simple pdf file, in which case content is severely limited.

Don't get me wrong. I'm very intrigued by the idea. I access my coins via phone on Heritage's site and it works quite nice. Unfortunately, if you have the basic memory package, it takes a long time to load sometimes.

Keep us posted on the results. I'm sure there are plenty of interested people who can use a more hands on program.

Don't have one of those but the only pics I have on my 3rd Gen. nano are coin pics. And they look really good on it, like min-HD IMO.
