As some of you may have heard, the US Mint was going to honor the 50 year anniversary of NASA with a tremendous 9 coin silver proof set and 1 $50 proof gold coin. They were not planning on minting uncirculated versions of these coins. If I remember correctly..... each coin would represent each of the 9 planets on one side and a commemorative NASA event on the other (and for all you planetary purists out there... the mint even acknowledged that the 9th silver coin will honor pluto... the dwarf planet - even though it is no longer considered a planet). The one gold coin would represent the sun and something quite significant on the other side... my mind definitely slips me here.

In the most recent edition of Numismatic News, there was an article about how the mint has supended the program for at least two years. The reason stated was the shortage of both silver and gold which is needed... BY LAW... to make silver and gold bullion. They were actually going to try and roll out the series at the end of this year. They can't do it next year because they already have their two allowed commemorative coins planned. So that moves the program to 2010. :(

I was really looking forward to this collection.

Sorry but as much as I like NASA, I say that if they can't get it done this year, and they apparently can't, they've missed their fiftieth anniversary and they need to wait for the 100th. Odd anniversaries just scream "We don't give a darn about this 'event', we just want your money!" And it gets even worse when you "celebrate" an anniversary when it ISN'T the anniversary.

If they have to wait two years, why not five? NASA's real centennial is in 2015, with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) having been founded just 11 years after the invention of the areoplane.

H E 'double hockey stick' i will :D I could only wish the funds were there to even consider such a proposition. No, not me. i wont be buying any gold. But there are some additions yet to be made before the year ends :)

(i wont be telling everyone i am done for the year, and then secretly buy some very nice 'objects' :D)

I'm almost glad. While the concept is great, and I can't think of any more fitting group to honor on a commem than NASA, I still think they're going overboard with it.
