I routinely go to the bank about every other week and get rolls of prez dollars. I kept the 2 I wanted for my album and have spent the rest. Havnt had a lick of issues, only had one do a triple take to make sure of what I paid her with. I guess it alld epends on where you live. I'd say, if you have access to dollars where you live, get em from the bank and spend the hell out of em. Let a roll sit around in a steamy bathroom for a week before spending them so they are less likely to be hoarded. The mint made it's bed, what stops us form helpign them out?
I spent a Sacagawea in a store last weekend. I do that frequently with no problems. In this case, the cashier didn’t know what it was. At first she thought I was handing her something of unusual value (Spanish doubloon or gold ducat, perhaps ? :hammer: ) and then she thought I was giving her something worth less than a dollar. She had to read the denomination on the coin to finally get up to speed. I’m so patient, I deserve a medal-coin ! … I mean a coin ! … I mean a medal ! ( Anything but an SBA ). :goofer:
What I don't get is this: Why do the First Ladies get gold and the Presidents get Copper? No I'm not a sexist. Just think this is a question worth asking.
I know the president dollars are "supposed" to circulate, but, this just seems "a bit" strange to me.
prez dollar and sac dollar are the same. bad luck. i think the prez dollars and the sac dollars were of the same failures. but for collectors. it is a great success. some variaties and errors were found. it is a thrilling thing.
agreed, but a lot of people aren't aware of this and judge by (no pun intended) face value and observation. grizz
I think its the simple fact that most people would rather have five bills in there pocket than five coins.
Nothing sexist about it. Preferential treatment of women is sexism. To say that all sexism hurts women is sexist. That said, there will probably be very little interest in the general population for either series. Get 'em off the dollar coins and put 'em on quarters and interest goes up, because you have circulating commemeratives. People like quarters but not dollars for some reason.
how to get the circulated prez series?. now it is hard to find the circulated prez dollars after washington. just like it is hard to find any dollar or half dollar coins.
And when they did the dollar coin did not circulate. So they introduced the Loonie and it didn't circulate either. So they dropped the dollar note. People grumbled briefly and then accepted the dollar coin wholeheartedly. That's because the general public USES quarters. So they saw the new quarters in their change. It was new and different and they started trying to get one of each. The general public does not use dollar coins, so they never see the new designs and don't really know that they exist. You can't get people interested in collecting something they don't know exists. (Advertising may tell them about them, but it isn't really the same thing and practical everyday familiarity with them like it was with the quarters.) Common argument. And it always comes back to the question "Why would you have five coins in your pocket when there is no reason you should ever have to receive more than one in change?" If you don't like them building up in your pocket as you do several transactions, SPEND them instead of just handing them a bill and getting back even more change.
hard to circulate i noticed that the prez dollars that we use it. the stores hardly give back dollar coin to customers. they just deposit it to the bank and or keep it for emergency use.
I've seen people with a pocket FULL of quarters and a wallet stuffed beyond capacity with 1 $ bills, that say that a dolar coin is to big to carry around. most people dont even bother to give them a try, and those who do get hasled when the use them If the really want to get rid of the 1$ bill (or reduce) have banks send all bill in and only send them coins. if the bank only has $ coins then people will use them. then the bills that were sent in can be slowly reintroduced back into the banks. ooo, or maybe next time the country gets stimulus checks from the gov. they should send out dollar coins instead.
I use them, even ordered a box from the mint to spend but never get any back in change and the banks don’t seem to carry many rolls. I can just imagine some federal reserve vault manager standing in front of a mountain of one time used $1 coins.:headbang:
prez dollars that's true. we have try our best to circulate them. it seems doesn't work. the only way or only hope is to eliminate the dollar bill.
Was there any reason to resurrect a more than a year old thread just to point out the obvious? The dollar coins don't circulate. Regardless of whatever justifications that they should, the vast majority of the public is indifferent to them and prefer $1 bills to $1 coins. This will always be the case as long as they have a choice; the only way to change the situation is to forcefully discontinue $1 bills. The prevailing political will is against that, and likely will continue to be so in the forseeable future. It doesn't matter what you put on a dollar coin, it's not going to circulate as long as people have a choice in the matter. Let's not belabor the obvious, OK? Having said that, I think getting rid of the $1 bill makes sense and would prefer to use $1 coins rather than $1 bills. But I'm obviously in the minority in that regard. I actually like the presidential coins... I'm collecting one of each in proof and business strike, and think they are a great mnemonic device to remember presidential history. But I hold no illusions that the series serves any purpose other than for something for coin collectors to collect... it will never be a practically circulating coin; and not all coin collectors are going to want to collect it (everyone has their individual preferences after all, and you can't collect everything even if you wanted to.) P.S. A lot of people argue about "In God We Trust" in some way or another... I'm sure it's a hot-button issue for some but I think the majority likely doesn't care one way or the other. Like I heard a radio talk show host say once, "I wouldn't care if my money said 'Screw You' on it, as long as I can still spend it."
I've used 'em when they pop into my possession. I've never been "hassled". If 100 people have no problem and 1 person does, the only thing we'll hear about is that 1. This distorts reality and leaves a distorted perception. EXCEPTIONS DON'T PROVE THE RULE. That's why we call them "exceptions". I personally do not believe people spending $1 coins are hassled as a rule. It is rare. Probably R-6.
No. No, there was not. Nor is there a reason to continue fixating on this issue. That's right. That's right. The Canadians embraced them "wholeheartedly" because they HAD no choice. They were probably indifferent and said "OK what the heck. Ain't no big thang." That's right. And foregoing checks and sending an Economic Stimulus pile of coins (or tax refund) is one way to turn people against them. You really want a coupla hundred (or even thousands) of coins to arrive in the mail ? What tha... ? Wha.... ? That's right. That's as it should be. That's right. I for one LIKE having a choice in the matter. I'm with ya.
as to the term "the exception that proves the rule." the term is very old and uses an obsolete meaning of the word "prove", which is "test". It's the "exception that TESTS the rule."
