The mint does roll coin, but only to sell for a premium on their website. Other rolls are done by contracted companies who then ship them to banks.

The coins I have dollar and quarter rolls say U.S. mint on them. The reason I ask is because I have some fairly old UC cents that were rolled and they started turning color.

I personally do not open my mint rolls. I am collecting them as rolls, and don't want to open them.

I routinely bought bags of SQ's, Kennedy half dollars and Sac dollars from the Mint to search for high grade specimens to submit for grading. While the bags are sold for a small premium by the Mint, it is the cheapest way to obtain bulk quantities of each date/mintmark, and it takes only a few to grade MS68 for the submitter to make a decent profit on each bag.

Personally, I don't recommend buying Mint rolls because the premium over face value is considerably higher and from my previous experience with buying rolls of SQ's from the Mint, they are unlikely to appreciate in value unless you expect to live another 50-100 years. ~ Chris

Its a dilemma for sure. I bought an unopened box of 1989 Upper deck baseball cards back in the day, hoping I had the Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card. After 30 yrs I finally couldn't take it anymore and opened them, wouldn't you know not a single one. Had I sold them unopened I would've doubled if not tripled my money.

It's your collection so it's entirely up to you.
