The 20Gs and 10Ds refers to the amount of pure silver in the coin. The G stands for granos, can;t recall right off what the D is.

I think the 10Ds refers to decimos.

Still couldn't find correct info regarding this coin or the date. Km 142 has a different obverse design. So I'm really wondering about this coin.

The top of the spear is what is different than the other coins I have like this...they dont have a spearhead but a cap on the top. I dont have my catalogs with me but tonight, if this hasnt been resolved I can look and see what I can find. :)

Yah I received the same input about the coin. One even said he didn't know there were "varieties" of km 142. The design of the liberty is completely different from the "typical" design. I'm very much interested in knowing about this coin because a collector has been insisting on buying it. For reasons I don't know.

Finally I am able to find info about this coin on the net. :hail: It is the 3rd, or "Modern Standing Liberty" which was the last type of Peruvian standing liberties and can be distinguished by having a very "Austere" Liberty with the triangular shield. This style was issued briefly, up until the Standing Liberty Types were discontined in 1857 (1855 for 8R's & 8E's).

The 1851 8R's appear to be the most common date of these.

Have to find more info about the date, though.

10 Ds. 20 Gs. means 10 Dineros 20 Granos. It was a unit used during the XIX Century for silver and gold coins.

100% silver was 12 Dineros and each Dinero was divided into 24 Granos.
For gold they used Qs. (Quilates) where 100% gold was 24 Qs.

Good info guys. I have a couple of Peruvian coins. I like some of the a lot. The 20g and 10 decimal reply was great. I always wondered what that meant on my Mexican 8 reallies pieces. Actually I could use some help in ID'ing the top medal I have posted below. I believe its for a centennial celebration of a final battle for Independence of Latin America that took place in Peru (its silver). Any info would be appreciated. Thanks Traci :hatch:
