Thanks for the info man, I love to gain knowledge and experience from others!

@robec is the man with matte proofs, so I always try to read his 2 cents especially!

I guess only a T.P.G. will make the final call on this one. (OBVIOUSLY)

It definitely has a MUCH HIGHER chance of getting the PR designation than any other "Is this 1909 VDB a MATTE PROOF?!?" thread.......excluding @Cascade!

    :)

The strike on the slabbed 1910 proof really tells the story. Although the MS64 coin has the die markers and even proof like rims, the devices on the proof coin are like night and day compared to the MS64 coin. Thanks for sharing this.

The MS 1910 is fascinating. It is the first real evidence that I have personally seen to suggest that Matte Proof dies went on to strike business strikes. I questioned 1910 in particular since over 4000 proofs were struck, it wasnt out of the possibility to see some weaker struck proofs. But of course 2 die pairs were used to make the 1910 proofs. So then that theory probably isnt plausible. So in the end I agree that the MS 1910 isnt a matte proof after all.

And what did robec say about your coin?

I didn't say it was or wasn't an MPL, only that it needs to have all the diagnostics present. @Hunting Rare did show one photograph that looked promising, but was so out of focus the diagnostic wasn't definitive. I wasn't able to see any other diagnostics. My recommendation was to send it in for authentication.

Who knows, this coin could be in your collection before too long! Isn't the V.D.B. the only M.P.L. you're missing from your set?! Or have you completed the series by now?

I had a 64BN, but sold it. I have no plans or money to replace it.:)

You were right at the very start of this thread. The crescent shaped die mark on the reverse is easier to see from a far and then zooming in like you stated, rather than trying to get up close and personal with a usb x10 microscope like your boy....

Here's 2 pics. The 1st one you can zoom in on your end yourself and see the die chip clear as day. The 2nd pic is just a cropped zoomed close up of the 1st picture.

This is the best I can get with my current coin photography skills....teach me your ways?! ;)

if I had that kind of money to spend I'd buy a nice 1916 SLQ or 1916-D Merc for my mother birth year set.

Look @Hunting Rare this thread has turned beneficial. How about you stop beating around the bush and give us the the straight on photos to help you?
It's real cool to find a rare coin, why talk about it unless you can show us the proof?

Have you submitted this to PCGS or NGC yet?

Not yet! I was still restoring it a bit to my liking....but I cannot wait to ship it off to ANACS first here as soon as I am able too. They have the most experience with impaired M.P.L.'s. And then after that I will decide if I want to sell as is or crossover to PCGS first and then sell. Time will tell all! :)

What do you mean by restoring, specifically, if you don't mind me asking?

Industrial strength pure 100% acetone baths (2). Then lots of elbow grease and very carefully cleaning the entire obverse and reverse with an acetone soaked pointed q-tip and a soft rubber pointed tip I use.....kind of like how some people use rose thorns to prevent scratching and damaging the coin's metal underneath the natural toning and patina.

    @robec

Changed it out of that super old 2x2...and while it was out I took a pic next to the closest conditional 1909 V.D.B. business strike I had for comparison.......then while playing around with the effects on my iPhone, I added a mono filter and I feel like this really displays the difference!

    1909 V.D.B. AU DETAILS (env. damage) vs. 1909 V.D.B. Matte Proof PR50ish+.

If you zoom in, even though it starts to get pixelated......you can very clearly see many raised die polish lines as expected especially around the word "TRUST", and also the die polish lines on Lincoln's nose!

Thought this filter really differentiated them......at least somewhat close to what it looks like in front on my face here in person. :)

Not a proof. And even if it was, not a matte proof.
You took a nice business strike and damaged it. Congrats.

Oh okay Michael, my bad. I'll just take your word for it since you know better than the person who has the coin in hand. Not.

Only 3 of these 4 coins are M.P.L.'s.......and the one that's not isn't mine. But I'm sure you knew that, right?

PUT UP OR SHUT UP! Send it to PCGS OR NGC & prove us Wrong. If you're Scared you're Wrong then don't send it in, but Shut Up!
