FSR: Ancient Coin Bargain List

Was anyone successful in the responding to the FSR Ancient Coin Bargain List email that was sent out today?
I noticed a post from @ancient coin hunter - that he was successful on an awesome Gordian III.. nice!
I was lucky - but do not know how lucky until an envelope arrives. I put in for multiple coins but just got the message back from Frank saying "thank you for your order".
This happened to me last year when I requested 4.. ended up with 2 being delivered.
He certainly does business his way - I really like it... opening that envelope will be extremely fun...

I sent Fred and email about 15-20 minutes after the list was sent out. I had probably 15-20 coins (yay tax return) on there knowing that I will probably only get a few. He replied back saying that he had "SOME" for me. We will see what comes in the mail!

 

I’m probably way too late since I hadn’t seen the list and had to go look in the Junk folder to find it. He is now of course a safe sender. Hope you get them.

 

I didn't order anything -- I figured I was way too late -- but I did appreciate some of the little jokes he sprinkled throughout, just to make sure people were paying attention. As with his current auction list, where he identified the two opposing heads on an Istros coin as Heckle and Jeckle.

 

I’m not sure how soon after he sent it out that I requested 3 (maybe 15-20 minutes). All three were gone.

 

I feel like ordering a Neanderthal coin just to see what shows up

 

I put in for a few, fortunately I responded pretty quickly so maybe I'll get lucky.

 

I responded about 2 hours after the list went out, and Frank said he still had "a few" of those on my wish list and would ship them to me with an invoice. I'm excited to see which ones those "few" will be.

Yet, if one of you guys and girls was faster than me and snatched the Postumus with the Neptune reverse away from under my nose, I'll be seriously irked!

 

I didn't look at the Postumus since I already have one in my collection. I should've looked closer since I'm a huge fan of Neptune

Yeah, lol, me too. Here's the description, for when it eventually goes away:

60. NEANDERTHALS, Oog III, c. 40th millennium BC, carved stone shekel, Head of Oog facing, Neanderthal inscription/dinosaur standing rt; VF for this with pitting and traces of lichen encrustation. From a recent excavation, a few of these were unearthed, giving us new insight into Neanderthal economy and government; also providing long-sought evidence that humans (well, almost-humans) did indeed coexist with dinosaurs, making Kentucky’s Creation Museum not (completely) ridiculous after all. 9.75

 

I *think* I got one... there were *many* others that were already gone by the time I sent my emails... about 30 minutes after he sent his!

 

3 years ago - when I first started collecting.. I received the email. I was sitting right in front of my computer when it hit the inbox. I took 10 minutes to pick out my purchases .. which I thought was really fast - 5 or 6 I think.. and no luck - they were all gone.

Last year - same thing.. lucky to be sitting right in front of the PC when the email came in. Super quick scan and I got 2 of the 4 I requested I believe... could be wrong on the #.. but got about 50%.

Today - lucky once again to be sitting in front of the PC. My scans are getting quicker (but smarter? doubtful!)- so we will see what he sends me... at this point I was just scanning keywords for holes in my collection.
Whatever happens, happens.. can't really go wrong at those prices.. but if I had a bit more time my requests probably would be different.. but it is so unique and pretty fun!

 

Makes a lot of sense considering this recent linguistic breakthrough:

That's a good one. I confess that I sometimes read through Frank Robinson's auction catalogues mainly for the jokes.

Hopefully mentioning this won't break any forum rules, but I remember that he once described the reverse of an M. Sergius Silus denarius as "Robert Mueller, helmeted, on horseback l., holding up sword and severed head of [you can imagine the rest]". I was very tempted to bid on that coin...

 

Yes I recall.. it was awesome.. but I think it was actually Adam Schiff wielding the sword and carrying the head in that particular case...lol

I got a coin like this. (With description only) so it remains to be seen how it looks in hand. I needed a Saloninus to finish up my coins of Valerian/Gallienus family members. And I got one! Probably saved $80-100 off of normal retail.



I pulled the trigger on one today in the Frank Robinson bargain basement sale that was circulated via email this morning. I already have 5 bids for the upcoming auction.

Saloninus, Pietas, good metal, VF/F+ as I remember. For $19 it is a great deal. No picture in the sale but here is the same type (above).

 

Man, now comes the wait. This is like waiting for Christmas as a kid. Except then I normally had found my presents and knew what they looked like beforehand
