Hello everyone, Lot's of time being spent on coins these past few weeks, and now after looking at some of these coins in plastic cases I was wondering should I take them out of the plastic case to see if they are really that scratched up? After looking at the plastic case more closely it appears most of the scratches are on the plastic case. Maybe the coin is not as bad as it seems. So I was going to break them open but before I do I just thought I would write to the experts. Your thoughts please. Thank you
Can't you open the cases without breaking them? you can take them out one at a time and inspect. If you obtained them not in a case then no harm. Plus you can always put them back in. Just don't scratch them, dip them, drop them, hit them with a hammer or drill them.
It's always best if you can take the photos with the coins out of their case. Those airtite disks look larger than the silver dollars. If I'm correct, that's not good! The coins will slide around in them. ~ Chris
I was thinking the same thing. If those coins are rattling around in those Air-Tites, you need to get them out and put them in something that will hold them still, even if it's just a 2x2, otherwise the Air-Tites will damage the coins.
I wish I could but...looks like I might need a hammer. I posted pictures of the coin with the holder that it came in. Thank you for the info.
Thank you, I posted pictures of the case that the coin came in, I said to others looks like I might need a hammer.
Shouldn't need a hammer. A utility knife should be able to find and pry open the seam, which will be on the edge close to one of the faces (i.e., not in the middle of the edge).
You mentioned a hammer several times. That will break the case and it could cause damage to the coin. The plastic may scratch the coin itself. Just use a utility knife and pry the thing open.
Use an X-Acto knife. Slip the blade between the halves of the disk and work your way around to separate them. ~ Chris
Great!! Thanks everyone! Have several coins like this in the plastic case, so going to try and do my best to crack them open.
