Based on wear, it could go 58, but there is no apparent luster. Old timers insist on luster to make 58
Wonder where this rascal has been hiding all these last 105 years??? AU-58 for sure, but would like to have a better look especially at the obverse from different angles if I were to go higher.
Schnickelfritz - I haven't heard that in a long while. Being from German background I heard that a lot as a child. A young boy that is always distracting but loveable. Not an official definition, but close.
The obverse looks AU55 but the reverse looks MS. The obverse will limit the grade to AU. Value might me at the AU58 range.
Yes, you're spot on in your definition, much of it is all a matter of interpretation. A young boy who can be distracting, slightly mischievous or cunning at times, but yet lovable. That pretty much sums it all up. Are you a "schnickelfritz" as well?
The green film on the obverse and green spots on the reverse appear to be some sort of surface contamination.
MS63 in my opinion. This is a date I like, as the mintage is less than a million, which puts it ahead of any Mercury other than the 1916-D (and the overdates, of course). As for value, somewhere between $100 and $200, depending on grade.
Thanks for all the replies. So, the collector (not from US or a US coin collector) is asking $100 for this.
I am not MS because I don't see any luster at all. (Which could be the photo/light.) The residual dark spots around the coin on both sides plus the stain on the obverse could be toning I guess, but looks more like left behind residue/crud that was not removed from a dip which could have removed the luster. Assuming it is toning and straight grades then I am AU and higher than $100. But if it gets details, $40-$50.
"Spitzbub" could be compared to the English expression "top dog/main man/head honcho, boy acting as the boss, etc." with most likely a hint of sarcasm included. Spitz(e) is the equivalent of the English meaning the top, peak, point (think Austria with its high Alpine mountains); and bub(e) is a common German slang term for a boy.
