Pics would help. A stab in the dark is worn dies/die deteriation. Do the letters stretch out and or blurr together?

    dimes matte/brushed finish

I hope you can spot some difference in the sheen between the ones with the shiny finish and the ones with the matte finish. The dimes on the right are matte finish, shiny ones on the left. I don't think this pic shows it up very well but did it as fast as Icould. Can yon see any difference?

Since 2005 the MInt has produced Mint sets with a satin finish, so it is quite possible to find coins in circulation that do have a different finish than the regular business strike coins. But they will be dated 2005 or later.

I suspect what you have there are just ordinary business strike coins where the finish may appear to be a bit different due to normal die wear.

    Dimes--matte/brushed finish

Here I am with all my dimes spread out on my laptop and I beleive you are right. I didn't know a worn die might be the cause but I think it enhances the fineness of this coin. There are some 2003's too. Sorry I couldn't get a better shot to m,ake a comparisson. THANKS. zg

Oldest Cent Find In Circulation Ever

Yesterday I bought $50 worth of cents in rolls in boxes. By the near the end of the second box I came up with my oldest Lincoln find ever in a box:

Unfortunately Lincoln has an apparent gun shot wound in his cranial region, but this coin does have the VDB. In the last year I have gotten a couple of 1910's but never a 1909. This coin is 99 years old, just incredible, what with the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln cent next year, to find one from the first year in a box bought at the bank.

So the date runs of the finds go as following:

    1909 VDB, but of course:)
    1919
    1928
    1929
    1934
    1940

Them-We have alot, how many do you need? Me-Oh I don't know, about $1700 worth:D. Them-:yawn:. The ones in the cubicles even rubbernecked out of there respective cubes. THey only had $480, so i got them. Then both girls at the same time asked-What do u need so many for? I replies-I'm doing a social experiment to see how many people know what they are. One says-Oh, I have a bunch. THen I ask-Most of the people who bring them in are older aren't they though?. THen she says-Yeah, come to think of it, My grandma gave me the ones that I have. It was too fun!

Found another 1943 steel penny today, that asks two I've found in two months...how can people throw these away? Also this week I found a 2000 wide AM, you can see the pictures in the error forum. And last week I found a 1959 D RPM-001, pictures are also in the error forum for this one as well.

    Happy Hunting!!!

They can "throw them away" (spend) them because they're worth about a penny. It's a rare dealer that will buy circulated ones outright from you. The circulated ones that dealers got as part of other buys usually go into their junk box where they sit for years waiting for someone to pay a nickel to buy them.

There were one Billion, 94 Million (1,093,838,670 to be exact) of them minted. That's over three for every man, woman and child in the entire USA today.

Uncirculated ones aren't rare; circulated ones aren't even scarce.

You're right. But from my experience, back when I used to search rolls, you just don't find these in circulation, anymore. You pull more IHC's than you do these. I always just chalked that up to the public just naturally keeps these "oddballs" when they find them.

This roll-searching is a volume-business. Great find there!

My point exactly. I didn't expect people to keep them because I thought their mintage was low. I expect people to hoard them because they're obviously different than any other Lincoln ever minted and even non-collectors pull them aside.

I actually got a 74 s Lincoln in change today.

I searched four rolls of cents today and found a beat up 56 wheat three or four early '70,s S mints, and something I haven't found before, a Denver mint Token from a uncirculated mint set.

Also got a 68-D Kennedy from the bank today when I was cashing in roll searched leftovers. :thumb:
