I may be missing it, but I can't believe this topic is not a hot (even boiling) thread here. They tried something like this Australia, and the public backlash caused them to backstep. http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20080505/2250221040.shtml Well apparently they are trying it here. http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20080922/1945122336.shtml eBay is essentially prohibiting checks and money orders as a form of payment for auctions listed on their site.
If I'm reading this correctly, even for sellers that accept credit card payments, eBay is forcing the buyer to give eBay their credit card number and prohibiting the seller from getting that information directly from the buyer.
I guess the reason why it isn't a hot topic here is because it came out a long time ago and was discussed then. Ribbit
This is what is said: Credit or debit card payment to a seller (through a seller's Internet merchant account) So the answer to your question is No. Ribbit
Sorry about the new thread then. I can't seem to find an old thread discussing this. I searched for both ebay and paypal. Is the news really that old?
Nothing wrong with bringing this crap up again Gatzdon. I have no desire to sell on ebay anymore. Selling a watch. Doing it from work and giving the boss a cut.
I sold my last item on eBay in June. I am really getting close to stopping buying on there also as a protest.
I promise you this.... it is being talked about in the coin community quite a bit. My local coin shop who has a ebay store is very seriously considering shutting it down because of this. Also, there are several guys in my local coin clubs that used to sell pretty heavily on ebay are now backing off. When ebay realizes they are lossing sellers because of this, they will back off..... but not before it is too late and they will lose a lot of business.
Doesnt effect me, I am fine with paypal or credit card...In fact I always have to be careful not to bid on items being sold by those who wont accept paypal as then I have to go out, get a money order, and mail it which is a pain in the butt for me...only way I bid with sellers who dont accept paypal is if its something I want bad and cant find elsewhere...I use my credit card on paypal and my credit card protects me, someone can take me much easier with a money order.
/amen I honestly don't understand why anyone has a problem with this... this is the 21st century, who uses checks and money orders anymore? Besides a buyer has a lot harder time dealing with a dishonest seller (or even just one giving poor service) without the recourse of being able to make a chargeback or open a PayPal dispute to get their money back when the item doesn't arrive or doesn't arrive as described. Having eBay act as an intermediary offers a lot more security and protection to buyers. I personally applaud eBay for doing this... it's about time! To sellers... I'd say what's the problem? Not having to deal with checks and money orders is more convenient for you as well as the buyers. Get with the times and deal with it.
ebay I think the problem a lot of people have with it is that eBay owns PayPal and collects a 3% bite for not a lot of service. That's on-top of the already 12% bite they take for selling on eBay, with the new fee structure.
fleaBay is just late coming into line with other online auction houses which charge buyers a minimum of 15 percent commission on purchases. fleaBay/Paypoo are just trying to bring themselves into line with Heritage, Stacks, Sotheby's etc. But the not taking cheques or money orders, they are going out there on that one.
Not much more expensive than classified ads, and reaches a much larger audience. PayPal is a for profit venture, not a charity. Of course they're going to charge for the service. And again, who even writes checks anymore? They take forever to process, are questionable as to whether or not they're even good, and are a pain to get the money back if given to a seller that doesn't send the item or doesn't send the item as described. Money orders are guaranteed to be good, but otherwise have all the same failings as checks. This is the 21st century; get with it people, checks are as obsolete as newspapers.
To close a deal on Monday I went and cashed a cheque at the bank and you guessed it if you looked in the Paper Money section, I got a counterfeit $100 from the teller. I use cheques all the time to pay for auctions etc. My last two eBay purchases were paid for by cheques. This time to get the price I wanted to pay for something yellow coloured, I paid in cash. For all the trouble I would have just paid by cheque in retrospect. And... Money Orders are more suspect than cheques by most institutions now, there are lots of fakes of those around. And if the issuer doesn't process it correctly even a Banker's cheque can bounce, I had it happen one time... for $21K!
Yeah, I only use checks when I must, who wants to mail anything if you dont have to, you are adding the cost of the coin. Not only that but I just dont like having a little book with little slips of paper anyone can fill out and mail. Most sellers have inflated shipping charges for what they are shipping so I figure it all works out. There are a very few things I need to write checks for these days and I cant say I miss them. Certainly I dont want to have to get a money order, you pay for that, use gas, then you also have to mail them, and there is no real recourse if they are crooks. I mostly buy cheaper coins I cant buy here in houston where american coins are king and most shops have a pitifull collection of world and ancients if they have any at all. So between shipping the the time and effort it takes to get a money order and send it snail mail? For a few cheap coins?.....no thanks. I like to pay instantly after I purchase or win an auction (just like I would IRL)...sellers like that anyway and I am batting 100%...as long as they are not crooks, there is no problem, I have never been in a dispute yet...
Good example...after I typed this I just won a coin on ebay, a somewhat common coin worth about 3 USD...I payed 5 USD, the coin is paid for now...to me its not a rip off because I know the seller and know I will have the coin in about 3-5 days....he packs the coin good, its a good example of the coin....and I will not find this coin in this condition here in the city, or cheaper. Simple easy...transaction complete and the coin will be sent tomorrow. So he gets a little something to cover cost, I get a nice coin, fast.
I know the fees are in line with the auction houses, but the services aren't even close. With a brick-and-mortar auction house, they take the pictures, write descriptions, print catalogues, sell your item, and deliver your cash. With eBay, you get to do everything yourself. And, if there's a dispute, you stand a good chance of getting hosed.
The items are not even close either fleaBay is fleaBay for a reason, it is a good place to find cheap junque, but when you want the good stuff you go to a real auction house.
