There are many U.S. coins that we, as coin collectors, consider to be the one coin that every collector of U.S. coins would surely love to own. The Absolute, coin of all coins and The Holy Grail as Numismatics are concerned. Some collectors may believe that coins such as the highly sought after 1909-S VDB Lincoln or the 1901-S Barber Quarter to be the one. How about coins such as the 1870-S $3 dollar gold piece which there is only one known (confirmed) example or the 1913 Liberty "V" Nickel. What is your pick or what you believe to be the "Holy Grail" of U.S. Coins?
Right now, I'm working upgrading on small cents, buff nickels and barber coins. For me today, I would consider the 1856 FE and 1901 s quarter my most wanted.
My holy grail is a rather common coin, 1881-S Morgan MS68, but it is not really common at all. However, it is attainable if it ever hits the market, under $20K. PS. Thanks for giving me an excuse to post it's photo again.
Any one of these. Class I, II, or III. http://www.coinfacts.com/silver_dollars/1804_dollars/1804_draped_bust_silver_dollar.htm
This would be mine, The Snow 3 (struck in 1856 not a restrike, the rarest of the 1856) 1856 FE MS 65. It would replace the inferior one that I own. If someone will loan me $60,000.00 I'll purchase it. http://www.indiancent.com/market/fe.htm
1895-P Morgan (proof) would be nice. 1796-98 Draped Bust Half with small eagle reverse would complete my half dollar type-set.
If you are giving away the rest of your coins because they really do not interest you, let me be the first in line. However, I agree the the Holy "U.S. Coin" Grail is the 1933 double eagle. As much as I need the S VDB, the "history" of the 1933 puts it way ahead. Its only competition would be teh 1904 silver dollar.
if i gave away the rest of my coins that would imply that i have the 1933 double eagle but i dont so ..... the 33 is a real coin along with the 1804 the others are just trinkets
So many coins to consider. I suppose for me it would be the few keys in the US type set. Chain cent, Wreath cent, Half dollar with small eagle, first type of the half cent, and oh yes, ALL the types of gold! I suppose photos will have to do and the knowledge that they are out there.
I saw a 1804 silver dollar at the Orlando Fun Show last year. I asked if they could take it out of the guarded case at let me get a close look at it. They said "No". Rotten basturds.
