    I'm glad this is certified. What kind of "S" is this? LOL 1885 S.jpg R 1885 S.jpg

Looks like a partial hole was started on the Mintmark.

Can you get a close up of just the mintmark? It could be several things.

Looks like a not so well-placed hit directly on the mint mark.

The S took a direct hit. An undamaged S looks like this...

Tough to tell, but could it be a rpm D?

Check your RedBook and tell me how many 1885-D Morgan dollars are out there.

I wish I could. I don't have any equipment except my cell phone. :(

That's all I have. I take a photo, then I go to the photos and crop it. Then is the post. See if your phone will allow that.

Much better! Thank you. Looking at this closeup I do not believe this is an "S" mintmark. Being an 1885 it can't be a D as none were produced. I believe this is an O mintmark that has been damaged.

If I am correct the TPG, ANACS, just made a mistake on the label. While not common it is something that does happen on occasion.

Again, thanks for the better photo of the area in question.

I see that you see the problem, no D mintmark for the year 1885. :)

Either a hit or a spot on the mint mark.
