My opinion is no. I'm saying that thinking that the coin is going to take on a washed out look if you do. It's hard to tell how much luster the coin still has from the image. It's a real gamble to dip a coin that has little luster remaining. Just my first thoughts.

Nope, it appears that's toning (I could be wrong), and if that is, then it will only make it worse. I don't think it's really negative toning, but not positive either IMO. (To me, that is)

It may also have been previously dipped, then re-toned, in which case a fresh dip might make it "lackluster." I personally wouldn't chance it.

Certainly not the MOST attractive toning but I'd leave it be.

Dipping could make it look a lot worse.

I believe the golden rule is:

Dips shouldn't dip unless it's already been dipped. :goofer:

What he said. I will also add that under toning like that I don't think you would like what it looks like once it was removed.

you expect pits under the toning?

It could be, but even if there are no pits I would expect a rough surface under toning that dark.

so in theory whats the best way to stopit before it reaches that condition frequent dipping wont help so IS is the only way? I sometimes have to advise people (curators and conservationists) where the atmosphere encourages that kind of toning all the time and a lot of money gets wasted also some of that silver is either on paper part of the paper or the cover of a book not only coins so we have atmosphere on the front and acid in the back against the metal

Usually coins with toning that dark have been put away in an album or envelope for decades and forgotten. Proper storage is always the way to prevent it.

I can't believe I am about to write this. The general consensus is that the coin should be left alone because dipping it might make it less eye appealing. I absolutely love toning, but I don't see how this coin could look worse. Mottled russet toning on an already lackluster Barber is a hideous combination indeed. I say dip the sucker. If it comes out ugly, use it as an AT experiment coin and hope to get lucky. Either way, if you dip it and it comes out ugly, and you try to retone it and it is still ugly, you are still where you started because man that coin is ugly.

Rather than dip this coin, why not just find one you like? It's not like this is a rare coin or a rare grade for the coin. Rather than roll the dice with the unpredictability of dipping, with a little patience, I'm sure you can find one that does appeal to you. I vote leave it alone...Mike

Yes your right , life just isn't worth living without that coin , seriously I saw that coin and thought that it was ugly , would never buy it , but lets say it was your coin that you put in a safety deposit box a long time ago and forgot about it , what do you do send it to NGC to "conserve it" they didn't do such a hot job on Spocks coins , or sell it , who would want it ? I'm with LeHigh , dip the sucker .

So if the toning was less pronounced and you could still see plenty of luster , sending it to NGC for conservation " professional cleaning " would that be an option ?
