do all nice coins have to be slabbed???

I see nothing wrong with this coin. Looks like a real nice Barber and will command a very strong price at auction.

    koresh,

talk to us what exactly is bothering you? the fact that it is not slabbed or are you worried about something else? at first glance nothing seems to be bad about the coin. the toning is something else though some people pay crazy money for that

Mike I absolutely agree with you about the certified coin issue, and I personally have cracked open most of my coins sitting in albums. Marlboro cigarettes the most popular brand uses low quality tobacco and I am still confused. Like you said do all high quality coins have to be slabbed, but there is some thing about this coin and some one I am sure will point that out, may be we are both right or wrong.

All high quality coins are recommended slabbed they provide a certain amount of protection to the buyer/seller and the coin from a respected TPG of course

It looks like a nice coin. I am not sure it is a proof from photos. I took
the photos you posted and lowered the contrast and saturation and
brightness. There seems to be more contact marks, like under the eye
that I wouldn't expect from a proof. Since color sells, I think the coin
would look more like this than the previous, but just guessing from
experience. Also now I can see some small circular areas in the toning
that are sometimes associated with Art.Toning. can't tell for sure. If
this coin looks like one you would like to have, and I think it is very nice,
and in your price range....and you have the courage to send it back if
you have any doubts than all you lose is postage hopefully. I like it
looking like this better myself :)

    That is a really nicefullstrike.
    Perhaps that is bothering you.

Strong strikes in Barbers, esp half dollars are fairly scarce.

And that is a full hit. Look at those stars.

    Nice, and interesting toning.

    Zaneman,
This coin is listed by Southerncoins yes, Jim I agree with you. It has a very strong strike and the toning I hope it is what it shows there. Any way I am going with this one and thank you all for the input.

Please post some comparison pictures. I typically stay away from greatsoutherncoin auctions. I would really like to see comparison photos of their coins.

An uncertified uncirculated 1893 Barber Half Dollar is a $500 coin minimum. If the coin is an MS64, it jumps up $1,000 in price. Whenever I see coins of this magnitude raw, I immediately wonder why it is not graded by PCGS or NGC. Usually, the reason is because the coin is a problem coin that will body bag. This coin does not appear to have been cleaned but the toning looks artificial from the photos. I can't be sure of that of course, because the photos have obviously been enhanced. If you are really interested in coins of this level, I suggest that you buy them slabbed by NGC or PCGS and then crack them out if you really want them raw.

Because of the shiny golden tone of the picture. Go to ebay and look at greatsouthern coin auctions. You will notice a lot of coins have the same appearance with the lighting. You will also see some coins with obvious wear labeled as uncirculated. Just my opinion.

Spock, while I respect you, I repectfully disagree. I prefer to not take a TPGs word for the grade. Although the slab provides a lot of protection to the coin, they can otherwise be protected from the outside world just as well and for cheaper. The best thing to do IMHO is to learn how to grade them for yourself, and be critical of any opinion offered. The TPGs grade is also just an opinion!!

Grading is subjective and not an exact science. Opinions will differ from coin to coin and the only two that are relevant are the buyer's and the seller's. If a coin looks "funny" to you, then examine it in hand, if possible and then either buy or don't buy it.

Mike, what you have said is just one half of the coin and please dont take it the wrong way but all our opinions on the grade of a coin are worth squat, zilch, nada. NGC, PCGS back their grade with money and that is protection.

By no means take a TPG's word for the grade but dont ignore the financial implications. If Tpg's didnt serve a purpose they wouldnt exist sure they are imperfect part of a flawed system but its the best we have and trust me its the best in the world. Sure you can be critical of every opinion offered including yourself but is that how you want to collect? or do you want to take into consideration opinions and knowledge of everyone and then make the best decision based on what you feel is right. There are a lot of people with a lot of knowledge sure they can all be wrong but there is a reason they are considered knowledgeable think about it.

One cannot ignore all the rules of the coinmarket because in the end we are all part of it. there are tons of people out there who believe that they are lucky if they get half the money they put into a collection when its time to sell. there is a very good reason most of us here dont feel that way.

Should you buy a coin you are not 100% comfortable with? never. 20-25 years is a very small amount of time in a hobby that has lasted more than 2000 years. IMHO what we are seeing here is revolutionary and the best is yet to come :)

Spock - that is the most coherent post that I've seen you make (including some complete sentences). Is there someone else in your house who posts under your name while you are away? ;)

We took a poll in another thread the other day that basicly came down to we can all learn to grade but it's also a talent that some are better at than others . I'm still not confident enough with my grading to buy a coin like that without the protection a TPG gives . To me that is a beautiful Barber with a great strike that I would love to own , exspecially at $500 .
