Really going to show my newbie ignorance now as an Englishman, living in Spain, looking at American coinage. Firstly the coin is clad, the two distinct metal types are crystal clear on the edge, but as it is sealed in a packet is not easy to photograph. Question 1: I have the possibly mistaken assumption that these were minted in San Francisco, so why does this one have a D mintmark? Question 2: Is it normal on this coin for the moon image to be mishapen (top left quadrant)? Question 3: Why is the near leg of the eagle thinner than the leg furthest away? I would have thought the other way as a painter i always have to get perspective right or at least pleasing to the eye, so this stuck out straight away. I am looking forward to some informative answers
#1 - D for Denver Mint #2 - That is the Earth not the Moon #3 - Leg design is normal. That's the way it was intended to be.
Apollo 11 - "The Eagle has landed".. on the Moon https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-eagle-has-landed/
As Paddyman said. There is a second, rarer design for the reverse with four raised islands, but your coin appears to be the normal design for a 1971-D. http://varietyvista.com/13 Eisenhower Dollars/1971DRDV0061.htm
@expat Note how this photo of the earth appears to be out of round. This is the image that was portrayed on the coin.
Thanks guys. Couldn't find much info on that coin and it differs greatly from the 1977 silver proof that i have and i wondered why.
No problem. There are so many different Ike Varieties. Here is one from my collection called the Friendly Eagle. https://www.usacoinbook.com/coins/5.../type-1-friendly-eagle-accented-crater-lines/ The link that @Danomite provided id great for the different types http://varietyvista.com/13 Eisenhower Dollars/index.htm
1977 Silver Proof? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the SF Mint didn't strike any silver proofs that year. All of them were copper/nickel. ~ Chris
Unless his 1977 is a Off-Metal Mint Error Quote - "1977-D Rare off-metal errors exist on 40% Silver planchets." closed quote. http://coinancials.com/CoinImages/Ike_dollars_bydate/1977-d.html#.XoB6c9OSnIU I can't find an example but here is a 1976 on 40% Planchet https://www.jmscoins.com/store/product.php?productid=18580&cat=272&page=1
