    2009 Cent Designs Released

Just released. Look at these. Waaaay to detailed for the small diameter of the cent.

The worst is the Capitol Dome under construction. Hello? Civil War, where was the cannon the CFA and CCCA had recommended? How about the hand writing?

The cabin design is the best. It's pretty good. But, didn't they change the look of that. Seems like something is missing?

I like the one with Lincoln sitting on the log. The others are just OK. I guess I'll have to see them in person to make a good judgement, though.

I like all of them. Will the copper cents be in the mint sets or proofsets?

I like the new designs. Actually, I would have prefered anything different. As nice as the wheatback design would have been to see...we've all seen it before. But I do agree with the OP....there should have been some reference to the Civil War. That's the defining moments of Lincoln's presidency....not the other aspects shown.

I like the designs on the whole but I can see how maybe they are just a bit busy for the size of the coin. I would rather see more simple but attractive designs. On the whole I just dont like modern coins, maybe its the manner in which they are designed these days, I dont know. Seems like one step above clip art.

Maybe they think that if the coins are badly designed, noboby will mind when they eliminate the cent.

There will only be three month's worth of each design. They'll pretty much be buried in the tens of billions of Memorials still out there. What we have to concern ourselves with is the new, permanent design coming out in 2010.

Why don't they understand that this reverse is needed. I'd even be happy with the non-VDB reverse, just to see this wheat ears on there. But, VDB would have made it even better.

I'm guessing "Lincoln at the Theater" was one design rejected early in the process.

sigh....I suppose they had to do something for the cent-ennial, but I will still chalk these desings up to the US Mint mass producing educational medals at the expense of distinct and beautiful coins. I was born 80 years too late...

Hahaha!! I laughed at that one! Whichever one they pick, I will be happy with, because sooner or later most non-numismatists will be acclimated with the new design.

What does everyone think about hoarding all the Lincoln Memorials (1982+) 10-15 years from now?

Obviously, the Mint and the CCAC couldn't care less about what the general public and us, as collectors want to see in our coinage or the designs would have been more original and thought out. We would have most likely seen a depiction of the Civil War on at least one of the four cents and at least had a better chance at the "wheat" reverse. I cant see that much imagination was used at all designing these reverses. Dont like it...nope, nope, nope!!

People didn't like the Morgan Dollar and the Flying Eagle cent when those issues were first released.....fast foward to today.

I agree, the wheatie would have been cool to see with a date of 2009 on it for one year.

As for the Civil War, I think it was the CCAC that got a little quesy showing a cannon?!?!

I believe that because it may send a wrong message to the kids(SARCASM) political correctness run amok AGAIN over Lincoln and the Civil War?! Give me a break, his entire Presidency consisted of war, we are at war now, and I'm sure there will be war in the future, and if anyone noticed all our kids do today (mine included) is blast the crap out of things on PS2 or PS3for hours on end. So what wrong with a cannon on a cent:eek:hya:

I cannot believe they did not make a 2009-S VDB, Deep Cameo Proof in copper? That would have been a sight to behold:(

My last mint purchase was the '82 Washington half, but I will buy a complete set of whatever they offer I guess. Probably a bunch of sets, I think they will make great gifts for my young neices and nephews at Christmas and birthdays:smile

I am generally pleased with the coins although the view of the US Capitol scares me (like it's under attack by terrorists). The designers could have done better on that 1 but the others I like. What I dislike is the Illinois state quarter. If you look closely, it looks like 1 of Abe's legs is missing. The designer removed the leg so it would blend into the map of Illinois but it looks weird.
