Hello all I was looking through my first ever coin roll and I found some interesting things but this caught my attention as I’ve never read about this except one other person on coincommunity. As you can see the ponytail is a good distance away from where it should be touching the neck and it’s also skinnier. I have another coin from the same year to compare. And ideas? I know it wouldn’t be worth much but if it’s an error or rare variety I’d be happy as a rainbow.

There is no error, just an over-polished die. ~ Chris

That is caused by an over-polished die. Nothing major nor rare.

The relief reduction that you notice on your coin is caused from die wear and or die cleaning. The face of the coin die get worn away from these actions. Coin dies that are used for business strike are not polished. That action is reserved for dies that strike proof coins. Sorry no rainbow.

Yeah, I keep saying "die polish" when I mean "die cleaning". Keep reminding me! Sooner or later, it will sink in. ~ Chris

I don't care if people spell words wrong , but I do think the proper terminology should be used, as this gives folks that may be new to coin collecting a better comprehension of Numismatics.

Do you get AARP magazine? Last year they did a great story on Smokey Robinson, Barry Gordy and the whole Stax/Motown era. It was a really great piece.

It's neat but it's only worth face. The Die was polished a little too much creating what you see. It's common and only worth a quarter.

No, I'm not a member of AARP, but I was a big, big fan of the Motown sound in the 60's & 70's. ~ Chris
