I was contemplating starting an Ancient Coin collection and found this coin on Ebay. Besides what the seller has stated in the auction does anyone know anymore about this coin? Thanks!!! http://cgi.ebay.com/ANCIENT-ROMAN-C...=39:1|66:2|65:1|240:1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
It is a bronze antoninianus minted in Rome in 263 AD, Reference: RIC Va Rome 259. Rated as Common. Obv legend: GALLIENVS AVG Rev legend: AEQIT AVG Overall, a fairly high grade coin struck on a flan much too small for the design. Furthermore, this particular series represents one of the lowest points, artistically speaking, for Roman coinage as a whole.
Thanks Ardatirion, too bad its a more common piece. I was kind of looking for something a little more unique. Any recommendations?
No particular price range or favorite emperor really. How hard would it be to put together a collection, say, one of each Roman and Greek emperor? Cost really doesnt matter.
Very. Very, very. Some emperors, usurpers in particular, issued only a handful of coins. Some emperors issued more, but are still expensive. But there's no reason not to try. I'm working on one myself, its a very common goal. Now,as for Greek emperors.... Are you referring to the Byzantine empire? Alexander the Great's empire? Excluding the brief period of Alexander's conquest, there was no unified Greek empire. But there were a number Hellenistic kingdoms. I recommend you buy a few coins, but read a lot about Roman/Greek history and culture. Wikipedia is excellent for this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Empire
Lets just say you will be paying $500+ on Otho alone... It is impossible to get all emperors BTW stainless
Not impossible. Very improbable and impractical. And $500 would be a bargain for some of the coins I'm thinking of. Uranius Antoninus, Dryantilla, Regilianus, Silbannicus, Pacatian, Jotapian, Domitian II. Two of seven are near-unique, with one only proved to actually be genuine in the past ten years!
I didnt realize the rarity of some of these coins. I may never have the opportunity to purchase every example but, I like a good challenge. I'll read up on some of these before buying of course and then decide what my first purchase will be. Thanks for the help guys!!
Indeed, but there may be more found. The unique gold mancus of the English (Mercian) King Coenwulf was purchased privately, later bought by the British Museum. I think at least one of the Domitian II coins is privately held, but don't quote me on it.
yeah, true, they can always find some (maybe) wouldn't it suck if you spent all that money on a certain coin, and the next week they found a underground lot of 1,000 of that same coin:headbang: stainless
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domitian_II Some info on this guy. Proves the usefulness of numismatics, doesn't it?
you could do an animal set or a military set, soldier set, building, atrology, I want to focus on (as well as a some coins before and after) the 12 caesars
you could also focuz on coins u've cleaned yourself, or by material such as only silve coins. Though you shouldn't restrict yourself to only buying that type as there might be something else that grabs your eye just make sure you contniue to read up before u buy and ask questions:hail:
