I purchased this coin on eBay sometime in December 2019, I think. I never took it out of the little manila envelope that came in. I recall discussions about toning and how coins become toned from being stored in paper. I just thought I would share. I'm kind of surprised how fast it happened. If I would have known, I would not have left it in the envelope.

@bruthajoe So the first photo is the sellers photo. Not yours?

All I see is a difference in lighting.

So the next question is; which picture best represents the coin in hand?

There are good acid-free coin envelope to be had. When a bought coin comes in a paper envelope it should be changed for something you know is good.

Excellent question and the only answer is either or neither. In-hand, you're going to hold the coin and tilt it this way and that to see what it looks like. Most likely it looks like both.

Most of those acid laden flips went the way of the California Condor a long time ago. My examples in such resided there for more than thirty years until I removed them and placed them into 2X2's five or six years ago. Some colorful and some ugly, but that type of toning (OP) don't happen anytime soon. Methinks someone is playing a bit with the 'lighting'........

Perhaps it quickly retoned after some sort of dip?

It's possible it was dipped before I got it but all I did was acetone bath to make sure I got the prints before I put it away.

The second one and it does not even really show up as bad as it does in hand.

If you're all saying that this happened too fast from a manila envelope I'm going to have to blame the seller.

I am betting that you could replicate that first picture by manipulation of the lighting.

Well I am not compelled to convince anyone of anything but here is my original post from when I acquired the coin. I don't know how to prove that I am not manipulating the light. I can not understand why I might have any reason to do so either.https://www.cointalk.com/threads/1909-vdb.353926/

no, no, no, never accusing you of that. I think the seller took the best pictures they could to hide the toning.

He's saying he photographed it once upon arrival, I think, and then put it back in the envelope, where upon reopening it, the gentleman received a shock. Close?

And that is a terrible development by the way. Not the fun kind of toning.
