So going though some of my collection like everyone else board from staying in due the to the virus. So I found an old pic green holder nicely toned Morgan vam 14a an R 5 See pups below....rusted D the rust can be seen above the D.. So my question just how rare is this R 5 Morgan? Note the mm the thin one unlaying
They only seem to bring a premium if they're a list VAM like the WOW list, the Top 100, Hot 50 etc. I once had a R.6 Morgan in PCGS MS63, but it wasn't a recognized/list VAM. No one cared. Literally couldn't sell it anywhere. I eventually auctioned it off to get rid of it and lost money on it. It's funny. R.5 and higher VAMs don't seem to equate to R.5 and higher Capped bust halves.
I seem to recall Messydesk posting that Leroy attributed the R Factors for the vams. But their values didn't reflect in the rarity. So in other words..an R 5 or 6 are rare but like you said no notarity amoung collectors. As like other series where a variety for the most part adds value to the specimen. Side note.... as I worked on this a few hours last night....until I found the pup to id. However.....let me add as a tool ....I kept telling myself that this coin had rust issues, yes frosted wings but pitted....my point is don't second guess what you know...... rusted dies should of been the clue that I followed to the answer. However I did allow other devices to sway me in the wrong direction.....then bingo! How ever it helped with the boredom of being inside, and it taught an old dog......when on the trail...don't get side tracked by other noise.
Yeah I just attributed my whole 106 coin Morgan Circulating set. Easily side tracked VAMMING. Stay with the basic you see then work from there. Sometimes you just have to walk away from a coin and come back to it later and you can see the obvious you missed previously.
