It does have lovely toning but I can't overlook the hits on Jefferson's face. I'd say no star.

I wholeheartedly agree. No star. Is that like getting no respect? ; - )

I guess I need to know the numeric grade for the coin in this instance. I already said no star but if the numerical grade was low enough I'd consider a star, just for the toning. So if Lehigh96 would share the numeric grade then it may influence all of our opinions.

Bag marks have nothing to do with the star designation. They lower the numerical grade but are not considered when evaluating for the star designation.

Then in this case, I'll have to change my vote from no star to star. The toning is wonderful.

As I mentioned in the other thread, there were two of these 50-D nickels in an auction I was following. They were similar in many ways yet different in others. After the reveal, I will share the picture of the other one as I don't want to reveal too much.

My opinion is YES to a star

Don't ask me how, but this coin does not have a star.

With all of the gashes on Jefferson's face I can't see for the life of me how it got an MS 67 grade! I would think MS 65 * would be more appropriate. Hey, who am I? No respect, no respect at all!

Right - like you said, if you had known the numeric grade, you would have gone "no star". For that you get respect.

So I mentioned there being two of these, here is the other 1950-D nickel that was originally in the same auction. Should it star?

No doubt! Plus the MS67 grade looks right; just compare the obverse devices. How could the first one even be the same grade!

Because you are looking at two different types of photos. My photos are designed to show the actual appearance of the coin, including marks. The Great Collections photos hide details. So while there are two obvious marks on the cheek of the non star coin, there are a bunch of marks on the reverse of the star coin. If I photographed that coin, those marks would be much easier to see and bridge what you are perceiving as a grading gap.

In addition, the non star coin seems to have a better overall strike. There is planchet roughness one the jaw on both coins, but my photos make it seem much more pronounced.

The two coins are very similar and are not more than one grade apart IMO.

I was comparing the two using the same GC photos and to me the 67 star was a superior coin. The mark on the non-star is in an area of the obverse that sticks outs immediately. To me they are at least one grade apart if not 1.5.
