My mother has a 1943 silver penny. This is NOT a steel penny of that period but is a pure silver penny, probably from a dime blank which mistakenly entered the penny die. She is looking to sell the penny for various health reasons, but has no really good idea of it's value. The coin has a registered certificate which was procured by the previous owner, her sister, and the certificate states it's purity and authenticity. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, PHstern
Howdy PHstern - Welcome to the Forum !! While it is possible that you have a wrong planchet error, you would have to have the coin authenticated by one of the top grading companies like NGC or PCGS. Sometimes they can bring top dollar, but only after that.
i would agree - have it authenticated with a top grading company like PCGS or NGC - there are other grading companies also but those are the top choices can you post a picture of the coin and/or this certificate Snowman
Thanks all, My mom will be retrieving it and the certificate from the safe deposit box today and I will post photos later. Thanks again.
Here are the photos Here are photos that I took today of the silver penny. My mom will be anxious to get a rough idea of what it might be worth. Thanks
I'm sure I'm stealing one of our member's thunder... Check out Mint Error News http://minterrornews.com/priceguide.html For a circulated 43 cent on dime planchet...$1500 /ymmv (your mileage may vary)
WHOA!!! That's a jawbreaker! Awesome! Reckon that's going to be worth quite a fair bit even in that condition!
Thanks for all the info. I'll take any suggestions as to who to call about a sale or auction. I'm a little hesitant to do anything with it locally. My mom took it to a coin store here in the OKC area and was offered 250 for it and told that it was not terribly uncommon. Fortunately she had a sense that he was not being totally up and up with her. My late aunt and her husband were amateur collectors and she did have a few other coins that she thought had value, but surely not to the extent of the silver penny. My mom also has a 1835 Liberty Bust dime, an 1822 Lombardy-Venetia 1 centesimo. She also has a 1978 d Kennedy half which she saved. I see nothing myself which looks any different about it, but apparently she did. If you all want, I can photograph and post those too. Thanks again, and thanks for the welcomes. Paul
Have you called PCGS and talked to them about regrading? How about NGC? If you have Heritage do the auction they may have free grading with PCGS... You can also check out: http://www.pcgs.com/prices/PriceGuideDetail.aspx?c=45&title=Lincoln+Cent
Thanks to all for the help. OK. Here are a few other coins that my aunt had in her collection. They may be worth little, but it's fun to find out. Again, the half may be worth 50 cents, but for some reason she had saved it.
