Gotta share this... Yesterday, my sister’s neighbor sold me 8 coffee cans full of Lincoln cents. The neighbor’s 90 year old father had “collected them” until his death about 5 years ago. With a story like that, I thought that they should be worth face value. They counted one can at $13 worth of cents. & I paid them 8 x $13 = $104 face value for them all. I poured the first ½ can onto a table last night & started searching for a 22 no D. Unfortunately, I have found that all the cans are simply the father’s pocket change from the 1980s & 90s. The very earliest coin found so far is from the 1940s. Most are dated 1969 to 1989. I will look for varieties until I get tired. When I get tired, all the non-copper memorial cents will all go to the bank. There are only about 10,000 more cents to inspect & I doubt I will get through more than 1 or 2 cans unless I find some thing which compels me to search further. I am now separating the cents by date and then will break that down by mint mark. During the mint mark inspection, I plan to carefully inspect for pieces of interest. Q1 Please let me know if you have a favorite variety for which you think I should look. Q2 If I were to end up with thousands of copper cents, is there someplace where they can be sold for melt? I wonder if the local guys that buy silver & gold typically also buy copper cents. Very best regards, collect89
I'm sure others will reply. I like to look for the 1983 double reverse, 1984 double ear, the 1995 double die obverse, and the 1998, 1999, 2000 wide AM.
1972-DD, 1969S-DD as well, Just a note of information, it is illegal to melt US Cents best thing to do is to list them on ebay, or sell them in the sale area here at CT. (They do bring a little premium but not much) You might want to check this website, alot of great information on it. http://www.lincolncentresource.com/
Go to www.coppercoins.com, they list varieties for each date and mint. :thumb: Best of luck! :thumb: Phoenix

I never got into memorials, since I've been so obsessed with wheaties, but knowing now how many varieties and errors there are; well, looks like I'll be doing some new research pretty soon. And from there after, the hunt is on!!
