Can you see the second date on the obverse and lettering on the reverse? A friend of mine asked me to photograph his collection, and this one is incredible. I can't imagine what it would likely sell for. $6,000? Higher?
I'm not familiar with this type of coin. What does the D/S Rotated Miller mean. I see no mint mark, but obvious about the date and letters. Very cool.
Double Struck and rotated in collar. It was struck once then instead of fully ejecting it went back in the collar and it rotated. Then struck a second time. Sometimes the first strike occurs then it flips over and when struck again you would have the Obverse and Reverse on both sides. Probably the Miller Collection.
Can you elaborate? I don't know these from Adam, but PCGS price guide for 1799 XF40 is 4k. XF45 with the error it's not worth more? Or are you saying it's worth a LOT more and 6k is an understatement? Just interested
Well, many people don't want rare date or low mintmark coins with Errors. And many error collectors won't pay more for an error type simply because it is a rare date or mintmark. So, I honestly don't know if $6,000 is low or high.
Very nice coin! $6,000 is about right. I just checked Heritage records. Its hammer price in August 2016, including buyer's premium, is a little bit over $5,400.
$6000 seems way too low to me. While unusual, there are collectors who build error sets by error type, and others who build US type sets composed of error coins. The latter would chase a coin like this for a far greater premium than a $6000 price tag represents.
