The clad layers don't wear off, the coppernickel just discolors. With further wear the discoloration wears through and the "silver" color returns.
Incorrect. The clad layers do not wear off. Clad is made of Cupro-Nickel. It turns red because the elements affect the copper.
And the nickel. They leach out the nickel from the alloy, leaving behind metal that's got more copper, which turns brown, right?
Of course they do, they're made of the same stuff as those outer clad layers on dimes and quarters...
Pictures are needed or your coin does not exist! Also.. Did you read any of the explanations given on this thread?
Welcome. Pictures would surely help, but if you read all the responses in this thread you will most likely have your answer.
Quarters should weigh 5.67. (Close enough). It's probably environmental toning (rust). If it looks like any of the quarters in Paddy's photos, it's 25 cents.
Why dip them in acid? Is it an experiment? Or are they trying to fool people.I seen a few on e-bay that are not what they claim to be
The coins I showed in my post are Environmental Damage exposure. Meaning long time exposure to the elements such as sand, dirt, soil, saltwater and harsh chemicals. I have found thousands of examples metal detecting. Clad coins and Nickels are composed of Cupro-Nickel which is a combination of 75% Copper and 25% Nickel. The Copper tones due to the harsh environment. I have been metal detecting for 10 years and still find them.
When you get a chance recommend me a metal detector. There is a area here in upstate ny that people are finding civil war metal and a bullets.Gracias
Hi everyone, I'm in the same situation as soledad0924, new to the hobby. Sometimes I'm confused, sometimes I cry because I have no knowledge of clad layers. I also have 2 similar quarters, 1 is very red and 1 is close to red. The difference is that one weighs 5.4 grams and one weighs 5.8 grams, I would love to hear some output please. Thank you all in advance for your help! Btw, how do I attach pictures?
There's no crying in this hobby. The answers to your questions have been answered throughout this thread. If your Quarter is the same 'red' color on both sides it is most likely a damaged toned clad issue due to environmental exposure. Also.. The weight does not matter because coins at times have a -\+ in weight difference.
