Hey Richie...thanks for such a great photo....not sure why the engravers put 2 stacks on the engraving????? Everything I have found on the note indicates the rendition was ater the USS New York...

Anyone else know anything about the engraving??

I'm sure it is supposed to be. The ship on the image doesn't match any US battleship perfectly, I think it is a bit of a generic image. But, the features pictured match a Kearsarge Class more closely than any ship I know of. But, they don't match it perfectly either. I'd imagine details we changed to either make the note easier to engrave, to make it better fit on the note, and just at the artists discretion (either the artist didn't do his homework or wanted the ship to look "better"...and I think the ship on the note looks amazing).

Just as an example of it not matching a Kearsarge Class perfectly is the ship in the note doesn't have small defensive gun emplacements along it's side. A Kearsarge Class Battleship had a cabin setup along the side with small guns. The Battleship on the note doesn't. It has more of a railing like a New York Class.

The major features of the ship on the note (number and location of large guns, masts, stacks, the bridge, ect) match a Kearsarge Class but there are smaller features that don't.

Here is an example of what I mean by those side gun emplacements. This is the USS Kentucky (BB-6) which was the second and final Kearsarge Class Battleship: http://joeschwartz.net/extras/landenberger/USS Kentucky.jpg
