from your experience, what is the age that people get interested in numismatics?

I'm thinkin' 25-30? just because they are usually married and looking for something to do.

    35+, I'd guess

Edit: Oh! Get interested... I should read closer, shouldn't I? I agree with the others, about 10 or 12.

From what I've read here in the forum when members write their introductions the age I see the most is 12. I started collecting when I was 12. When I was 25-30 yrs old I was newly married to my first wife and didnt do very much with my collection. Oh, and the wife made sure I had plenty to do..lol

You asked for the average age and I would have to say about 25 is right - about 1/2 at 10 or less and most of the rest at 40+. However, had you asked for the median age, I would guess it would be close to 10.

Either I misunderstood the question or some people are getting interested in Numismatics at a much older age than I realized. :)

Well I collected as young as 8, but did not really start until I was out of college. I was really interested even when I was not collecting. Did not really get serious until around 2000. Then I started on ASE's.

    LOL!!!

I would say that most get interested as young kids, but then in the teen years depart from collecting. Later on in life...sometimes longer than others....they return and keep on pluging away till they can't anymore.

I feel blessed that I've been able to keep up with the hobby, and that life hasn't pulled me away from learning and studying about coins. Who knows what will happen in the next few years, but for the time being, I'm enjoying my time here with ya'll!!

For me, 20. My age now. I needed a hobby to keep me out of trouble after being placed on probation.

    And it's been working great!!!!

I'd say most become interested as teens. But most can't afford much till they get jobs and the hobby can be enjoyed more. I enjoyed the hobby as early as 9. But, when I was able to buy coins whenever I wanted after I got a good job, I'm now able to enjoy the hobby on a whole new level. So, there are many different layers of interest depending on age and means.

I started my collection when I was probably 6-7 years old. I really got bitten by the age of 10 and started haunting coin shops.

I can't remember at what age I was when I first started "collecting" coins. I was very young though..... I still have the brightly scrubbed Indian Head Cent collection to prove it. Officially, I consider the year I purchased my first three items from the US Mint as my first year in collecting... They were the 2 coin Statue of Liberty set, 86 proof set and 86 proof American Eagle. I was 14 years old in 86.

i started at about age 4 and about age 6 had silver and gold at age 8. there are benefits to starting young :D i dont really see why there had to be a break of 2 years between metals though
