It's the key date to a popular series. I would be surprised if it didn't sell for at least $300. That said, I shudder to think what a coin that corroded might net grade.
It should close at roughly $400. Yes it is a key date! In fact, excluding the 1856 eagle, it is THE key date to the series.
Seems to be a few hundred bucks worth of '77 to me as a hole filler Looks like a digger thats been scrubbed and oiled, but, it's a '77 like NP said
A recent HA auction had this result: With the coins in that auction, I can't imagine that the AG 1877 Cent was as much as $200 of the total value. The value of the 1913-S quarter alone is about the whole sale price. An 1877 in Good runs around $800. Below that there is About Good, Poor and Filler. The OP coin is no better than a Filler. I can't see how it even approaches $200.
Actually, you omitted "Fair". It goes AG-3, FR-2, and PO-1. I believe the term "Filler" applies to any extremely low grade speciman, Culls included.
You're right, I did forget Fair. Perhaps I should ask how those of you following this thread would grade the OP coin. And what would be the reasonable values of an 1877 in Filler, Poor, Fair and About Good, given that Good is around $800.
Yes, the corrosion is bad, but the detail is very nice. A Fair or Poor coin would have very little detail - probably just make out that it's an Indian Head and you might see one digit of the date clearly. On this coin, you can see the date clearly and there is lots of detail. I dunno. I'd prefer this over a Fair that has little detail. I don't know how much corrosion would take off the grade, so I can't give this coin a grade, I can only give a feeling......
good point, the final total is less than the 1896 S and 1913 s were worth, alone. Unless they were very low AG's.
For A KEY DATE coin I'd say AG-3 problem free would be 60-70% of good $480 to $560. As for Poor, lets face it poor means AG-3 with serious problems, around half that of an AG-3 coin $240 to $280. Filler means you'd be able to maybe see the last 7, barely if that, etc maybe 25% of poor $50-$70 Basal state would be a coin identifiable as an indian head cent, worthless. This coin qualifies as poor. It is an AG-3 with serious corrosion on it, but it has a 4 digit solid readable date so guess what, even as an album filler its the key date for the series so $250 to $300 isn't unreasonable and up to $350 if you've got some serious bidding wars going on. People want this coin. any 1877 is going to get shot up there pretty quick.
I would only buy that coin if I planned to upgrade in the next couple of years. Although you might need it to complete a set, becaue it is THE coin of the series, everyone will look at that coin first. I can't imagine opening up my dasco and having a friends eye see that thing first. Save up some money before buying at least a G.
"genuine" ? How are the Ns on the reverse? Is there anything in this low state of preservation that lets us say "genuine" after the grade? Very best regards, collect89
If that one wasn't bad enough, how about this one? It looks like someone used Brasso on it. Or this one (described as an 1877, visible under magnification) -
