Well, if my local supermarket is anything to go by a lot of people have stocked up on TP, Pasta, handwash & worst of all Yorkshire Tea !! I realized as soon as Yorkshire Tea was no longer available that something was wrong with the world On a lighter note - I used to cough to hide a fart, now I have to force a fart to hide my cough
*confirmed cases Who knows how many thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of cases are out there. Sure would be nice to have some test kits wouldn't it...
This is also a good site, with the numbers updated on an hourly basis: https://ncov2019.live/data. Johns Hopkins also has a good "numbers" website. I am quite certain that the number of actual cases in the USA far exceeds the number of "confirmed" cases, and expect the latter number to increase greatly once testing becomes more widely available to people other than (1) those who show symptoms and have traveled recently to certain countries ; and (2) professional athletes, politicians, and other celebrities.
Here in Spain all educational facilities closed last Friday....Today all bars and restaurants closed.....Supermarkets are still open...People flooding out of the major Cities to stay in second homes on the coast or in the mountains.....Today, for the first time, I've noticed how empty the streets are its like a ghost town...Every day the positive cases rise and now there are talks to possibly follow the complete lock down as in Italy....
Yes, that has to be assumed that it is only ones that have been confirmed *and reported*. Plenty of countries not testing and plenty not reporting or whose reports are not reliable. Probably should presume that an order of 10 to 50 times this at the lower end.
...sort of. Here's the latest news from that large school district: What do you suppose their attendance will be like Monday morning?
Seeing as some parents work jobs that require them to be at work and they cannot afford child care...I imagine there will be quite a few unfortunately.
Nothing much happening in Ottawa/Orleans in Canada. We have 3 confirmed cases/ one the PMs wife. All are in self isolation, with mild symptoms. The hysteria with toilet paper hoarding is beyond belief Here in Canada 197 cases/ most are like a mild flu/ cold. Here is a coin from, "Mother of all Plagues"=Black Death. Things generally start turning a bit crazy here in the SF Bay Area. The picture below shows the rice and pasta shelf in a local supermarket yesterday at 9am. Fortunately, my Central European upbringing has conditioned me to always keep large amounts of basics in the pantry anyways – for the first time in my life I think that this might actually be quite reasonable and not just a peculiar cultural tic. The university I'm based at has sent everyone home to work remotely, and it looks as though things would stay like this for a while. Last week, I have taught my first online seminar sessions. Although this worked surprisingly well, it still feels weird for me to teach in front of a screen while sitting on my living room couch instead of having face-to-face interactions in a classroom. My biggest concern at the moment really is that the research library I am using has limited its services so that it isn't possible anymore to order books from storage. This will have a serious impact on my work in the coming weeks, and I'm definitely not happy about this. My wife and me had to cancel all upcoming travels well as a long hiking and camping trip we had planned for next week. Social stuff is down to a minimum. At this point, we are basically doing "holidays at home," which is actually not a bad thing. Finally, we have enough time to read through the pile of books that had been accumulating, fix some things in our apartment, and just spend more quality time together. Also, I get to take pictures and write tags for some of my coins that had been "in the waiting loop" – the image below is related: Teutonic Order, under Grand Master Conrad V von Erlichshausen, AR schilling, 1441–1449 AD, Thorn mint (?). Yeah, that's got a lot of people worried. "Safety" is a slippery concept. Some of the homes students where students will be stuck aren't very safe places. The relief measures proposed Friday in the US mention support for people who have to stay home with a child, but there can be a very long gap between a promise like that and delivery to the people who need it.
The bill is supposed to have the Federal government reimburse all businesses for 2 weeks of paid sick leave. Additionally, individual states are adjusting unemployment benefits. I believe California is/will extend the amount of time for unemployment at 2/3 average monthly wage.
Yeah, but that costs the employer, shifting the burden off the person who made the irresponsible choice to get sick.
Here in the Bay Area I was able to get most of the supplies I needed yesterday, in spite of the partially empty shelves. Meanwhile I am holed up in my house. Since most of the time I work from home outside of client/investor meetings I am used to the solitude - I have four screens in my office to keep me company. Last week was brutal, fortunately NASDAQ rebounded Friday with a 9.35% gain. For now, let's hope for the Return of the Happy Times...
Kind of like that. A lady tried to grab a couple of cans in front of me on the shelf when I was reaching out for them. A bit crazy.
Shame that people can't figure out that if we all take care of each other, we will all be better off...instead it's the "eff you, I got mine" mentality.
