Should I be concerned about buying coins from Continental Europe?

If one is truly concerned about contanimated packages, the best thing to do is to store them away in a corner of the garage for one week. The virus cannot survive on surfaces for more than 3 days, so it's a bit of overkill. However it does guarantee that you're safe.

I just got a pretty sestertius of Faustina II in the mail yesterday, eBay auction from France. Order placed on March 2, arrival, March 13 (that's faster than I get from Florida sometimes!). Which is to say I didn't detect any delays.

I made absolutely no anti-virus provisions when I got the coin, so excited I was to open it. No symptoms so far, but I'll keep you posted...

Hello @DonnaML, things seem to be escalating fast here in Europe now. Some areas are more effected than otters. Where i live,as of yesterday, is almost in complete shut down. Seems logical that it will effect all services too, such as postal services.

Not my facts or estimates mate, they are Dr Fauci's. Granted his estimates are a worst case scenario, but they are a real possibility.

NB: I said 'up to 20%', he said '15-20%'. Let's not spilt hairs.

IMG_1332[5013]Bullion versus virtual.jpg I know most of us have read accounts from Ancient Times where plagues and epidemics have swept through city-states, kingdoms and empires and are frequently cited as one of the causes of the decline and fall of such states. Seeing the economic disruption and social dislocation going on right now I can see why some historians of the Ancient World include plagues and pandemics as part of the reason for these declines and falls, especially if coupled with other disasters like crop failures, droughts and outbreaks of war. Fortunately the barbarians are not at the gates for us and locusts are not sweeping through the grain fields but it becomes clearer how the nexus of several events like these could, and probably did, cause irreversible damage to earlier civilizations. By the way, seeing what is happening to virtual currencies, our hobby of collecting coins, especially silver and gold, looks like a wise choice so, buy a few more. Also to illustrate the wisdom of numismatists in collecting at what they do, look at the illustration of the three coins shown here. First is a close to pure silver lifetime coin of Alexander the Great (close to 17 grams of almost pure silver). The second is a gold solidus of Valentinian, 4.45 grams of almost pure gold. Number three is typical virtual coin of … .

The coin I bought from the Netherlands is going to be shipped via FedEx rather than the mails. A nice free upgrade from the dealer. He was worried about COVID 19 getting stuck in the mails given the precarious situation regarding shipping from Europe to the U.S.

In my experience Fedex is a much better option for packages coming from The Netherlands to the US, pandemic or not.

FEDEX is the most reliable service usually period. Inside the EU is usually 3 days, including deliveries from UK.

Hello, as american scientists have found out is, that this virus can only survive for 3 days on material, there should be no danger at all and no need to sterilize any incoming coins from Europe. And by the way, I live in Germany and have no problem with the virus. 99.5% of the infectet people will survive (at least in Germany with the excellent healthcare). It is causing problems in the day to day business like, no people from Europe are allowed to go to the US (exception: Ireland and GB, nobody knows why, because they have the virus too) so flights are reduced/cancelled.

@baseball21 I work in a microbiology lab in Louisiana, and can tell you first hand that the healthcare system will not be able to handle a large scale epidemic. During this last flu season we were working at the bench around the clock and ran out of test kits multiple times. My biggest fear is that the phlebotomists and nurses will be the worst hit which would spiral this thing out of control.

I received two coins today, one this morning from Italy that I had written off as possibly turning up maybe in months not days. This coin is a Marc Antony Legate Denarius shipped by Artemide by DHL. In transit Wednesday, delivered today. It took a circuitous route via Slovakia and then to a minor UK airport. A couple of hours later I had another email from DHL saying that they had delivered and I thought this was a repeated email regarding the same shipment but it was this As shipped from Germany by Numismatik Neumann. I have wanted a decent As for a while so this was a great end to my week.
The cost of the DHL shipment was around $20 and I consider well worth it because DHL, UPS and other freight carriers operate dedicated flights with their own aircraft.
It is reasonable to expect delays in the mail as this virus affects staff and over here we have a recommended "voluntary isolation" program supported by the government and as there are always people who will abuse things, I dare say we will see shortages of government employees faster than in the private sector.
