I want to know what everyone thinks about this coin. Does it deserve a star designation or not. If you have any comments/reasons why they would also be very helpful. :smile
Very funky color, and the hits on the cheek keep it down. Also, looks a bit weak on the windows of the memorial. [reverse].
Lehigh, Is it the norm for NT coins to be toned on both sides? I don't have a lot of knowledge in that area.
Toning on both sides is not really an indicator of NT or AT. This coin is an example from the appalachian hoard. These nickels are widely considered AT, but the hoard was graded and encapsulated by NGC years ago when they considered the toning market acceptable. Presently the slab has the now defunct T designation. I have examined this coin at length and can't determine whether or not the toning is natural. The colors (green, pink, and gold) are common on war nickels but the progression of the colors specifically on the obverse is very questionable. The depth of the toning is outstanding and it in no way impedes the luster. My feeling about the appalachians is that if they are AT, they were done by a very skilled coin doctor. All of the other appalachians that I own are in new slabs and were given the star designation, but they also came from a pedigreed collection (Bingham). I would really like to resubmit this coin to NGC for star designation review as it is in a holder that pre-dates the star designation, but am worried that they will not give it the star because they will immediately recognize it as an appalachian. Even though they have given other appalachians the star, I am worried that this one without the Bingham pedigree will not star. Presently, 6 of my 10 registry war nickels have the star designation and this coin with a star would give me an additional 190 points. I am presently in 9th place and over 300 points behind number 8. Based on the results of this poll, I think I will hold off on sending it to NGC and wait until I complete my set to see if I really need the extra points. The best finish I can hope for is 3rd place. The top two spots are simply out of reach. BTW guys: This coin is not overgraded by NGC standards. In fact it is noticeably cleaner than many of my MS67 war nickels. However, this would never go above MS66 in a PCGS Holder.
Even though I read your post where you explained the Star I still do not get it? I personally like the nickel star or no star! Thanks for sharing! I think my wife thinks I'm looking at porn by the way I drool when looking at pictures of your toned nickels! LOL
Excellent coin with truly spectacular color toning. I believe it is natural toning. I had one similarly toned it was a PCGS MS66FS. The gentleman who bought it lived in the Chicago area. We use to use ebay in the late 90’s to buy our nickels. notcronus Give it a star.
There is no question in my mind that it does deserve a star what a beauty a nice mixture of colors a wonderful unique natural toned coin a work of nautural toned art it looks like an abstarct painting . I would say the grade should be a MS67star Lehigh Jazz
Did they star them then? Someone pointed out in the other post that they didn't put FS on the grade. This one has T for toned and I remember seeing many with W for white.
The star is added if NCG determines a coin has exceptional eye appeal or characteristics that distinguish them from other coins of the same grade.
It should be mentioned the coin I had was the same wartime silver composition, but was a 1944S. Toning on this year set varied from this gorgeous opalescent tone you see in this coin to the streaky tones that were noticed on the 1943P. There is a nickel in the series called the “blackie” does anyone know what year it is?
Are you talking about war nickels? I don't know of any war nickels like that. I know that in 1958 and 1959, coins were struck on sintered planchets and were very dark. They were called "black beauties" and were very popular at the time. I have a couple of them.
Right on. That's what I was referring to. Now I wonder how many others knew the correct answer? When I opened my first roll and noticed all the black toned coins I was ready to call the dealer and ask what he was selling me. Decided to talk to a friend first (former PAC member since the club wasn’t around anymore) and he gave me the low down. I decided to keep the roll.
