I’ve been on the hunt for my first reeded edge Capped Bust Half and finally scored this one graded by NGC. She arrived today and I’m in love with her. What do think is the grade? Any other tidbits? They didnt do Overton varieties for these? I tried to include some different lights and angles.
Xf45. There are no Overton numbers for reeded edge capped halves. There are GR numbers and rarity ratings as provided by Dick Graham in his book:
Terrific, thanks. The only online source I can find for those is the NGC VarietyPlus website. https://www.ngccoin.com/variety-plu...st-reeded-edge-half-dollars-1836-1839/801042/
EF-45. The reverse might be better, but the obverse grades the coin. There are two types of these coins, the “50 cents” and “half dol.” I will post photos later when I am on a desktop.
Yeah, I was familiar with the Type 1,2,3. I always had it on my list to get all 3 (already owned a type 1). I recently bought a Intercept Shield album, and interestingly.... they only list the Lettered Edge and a single Reeded Edge.
Type collectors recognize two designs for the Reeded Edge Capped Bust half dollar. The first was issued in 1836-7, used "50 Cents" to define the value of the piece. It should also be noted that the rim around the reverse was low and provided very little protection to the outside lettering. I have seen very few of these coins that were heavily circulated, but if they had seen a lot of use, this design defect would have been a problem. In 1838-9, the denomination became "Half Dol." Concurrent with the change the rim was made higher and wider. The relief of the letters was made deeper in the die which resulted in stronger strikes and better defined devices.
https://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/4491588-001/58/ I dont see the AU and I dont see the cleaning. It’s being busted out anyway for my album. But I am recording it as a 45 in my notes.
Cleaning? Is it the uneven discoloration on the obverse? AU? I don’t see a hint of luster... Anyway it’s a nice coin for your album.
OP's coin appears to be GR-15. R-3. Diagnostics from Graham's work that I can make out from the photos are in black type and diagnostics I cannot determine are in [parentheses]: Obverse 12: Second 8 higher than 3. Leans slightly to the left [and is recut on the upper part of the lower loop on the left side]. [There are several die line diagnostics called out but the photos and/or wear don't allow me to determine if they are there or not] Reverse L: Die misaligned with dentils missing between 12 and 2 o'clock. Recutting left of D2 and serif of F. 9Note; Graham's photo of LF DO exactly matches OP's coin.)
