US Mint Disappoints Me

A friend of mine from US who also happens to be a very generous CT member sent me the 2008 US Mint UNC P & D coin set as trade. I was surprised to see the lack of quality control check in those sets as I never got anything from US mint before.
The first disturbing thing I noticed in the set is the Lincoln cent (D) full with carbon dots both in reverse and obverse.

The 2nd coin which I suspect to be an error is the P mint Oklahoma state quarter with a dot in 2008's 2nd zero.

Sorry for the blurry pics. I was in hurry as my cam's battery was about to run out but I guess they are enough to prove my point.
My question is: Is my case an isolated incident or is it US mint's regular flaw in QC?
I won't be sending them back for replacement as I simply can't afford the high international shipping charge.
I am though really disappointed with these two coins as the US Mint claims its UNC sets to have above average strike and quality.

wow! that kind of sucks! I have as of yet to oder my sets for this year, so i can speak of the quality .. yet... but in the past, none of my coins have been all that bad...i do get some losers on occaision, but i am not that picky either! But i have read comments from others here that some of the sets/coins they get can be downright nasty looking.

    so sorry for those coins!!!

Damaged sets due to poor shipping is fairly acceptable but putting problem coins in UNC sets are not IMO.

Hey DJ...no probs....I'm very happy with what I got but I'm simply amazed by US mint's bad QC. I respected it a lot but now I came to realize why others always complained about their mint stuffs.

I have ordered over 100 proofs from the US Mint. Every one of them was PR69 DCAM or better. Zero problems.

I certainly empathize with your disappoinment. That 1c is no good. That said, perhaps a sample size larger than one order is appropriate.

Odd that I don't see spotted pennies in circulation. Makes me wonder if there's something different about the mint sets. Maybe a packaging processing issue.

possibly mine were all part of the silver proof sets. i have lost over a 100$ in shipping due to mints inefficiency this time i am taking my shipping back

I bought the 2006-S BU San Fran commemorative and was very disappointed with the flimsy and cheap packaging. That has been the last time I have bought a mint product. I would really like one of the BU $5's, but I think I am going to get a nice 69 or 70 in a NGC or PCGS holder instead of the lousy mint packaging.

Yes indeed they have thrown quality to the winds. Royal Canadian Mint has never disappointed me with their packaging etc.

I had a US silver proof set smashed up a little bit in shipping. One of the cases had a crack in it and the outer box was slightly crushed and creased. At the time it didn't look too bad so I ignored it. But when it came time to sell it I regretted that decision. If you get bad coins from the mint, definitely try to return them.

One of the problems with the 2006 San Fran sets is that a lot of buyers found that the $5 gold coin had gotten out of the packaging by the time they got it.

Without trying to sound too biased, I've collected a fair number of both Canadian and Us mint sets and the difference in quality between the two are like night and day. The Canadian sets are always exceptional, while the US sets at the very least have a few bag marks or other unsightly flaws. If you haven't already, buy a set and you'll see what i mean!

I'm not sure what the Canadian Mint does differently, (or maybe it's because their runs are much smaller,) but the US Mint should be taking notes.
