What are the correct diagnostics? About all I can say is that it looks harshly cleaned, but I am not a Barber specialist.
This seller has 100% positive feedback and is representing these as 100% authentic. How can you tell, Rusty?
If those aren't authentic, then I'd say that's pretty disappointing. I've bought tons of coins off Vette without any problems ever. And I've never questioned the authenticity of them.
when I first started collecting, I bought a number of things from this seller and sent them off to ICG for grading. They all came back bb'd, usually cleaned (this before ICG started grading problem coins). I was satisfied that they were genuine. My personal opinion is that he is a major clearing house for problematic inventory, and if you don't have a problem with cleaned items, go for it! I am also sure that astute collectors such as SteveMS70 can spot some good coins there and make some real buys. I mean, look at the sales volume!
Really no need for sarcasm . The only coins I've bought from him were foreign coins, and I never spent huge sums of money.
I've bought some Morgans from Vette and I can assure you that none were cleaned. I suppose it all goes back to know what you're buying. You can't blame the seller if you are clueless about what you're spending your money on. He's an outstanding seller in my opinion. Guy~
Steve, I really meant no sarcasm towards you, actually the opposite. What I was attempting to say is that when a seller does such a high volume of sales-- even if much of it is in 'problem' coins, a careful buyer can pick up nice bargains that show up from time to time. I apologize if you took it as criticism-- definitely not what I intended.
I just noticed there were about 5 Barbers for sale and they all looked the same , right down to the sharp horizontle bars on the reverse , in other words they looked a little funny to me , In retrospect I shouldn't of worded the thread Chinese Barbers , I should of asked if anyone thought they where ok or counterfeits , The conterfeits coming out of China today are so good , they could fool a lot of people even someone with a 100% rating . Next time I'll watch my wording . rzage

I didn't know that the chinese were making barber halves..I have bought from vette and have never received a bad coin..But as you say, some of his coins are cleaned. You just have to be careful..He gets a lot of bidders for his coins, so a lot of the time the coins go higher than I want to pay.
rzage, thanks for the link. those coins look genuine to me, but cleaned, and the seller makes that clear in the description. The Chinese fakes I have seen have areas of mushiness, and a peculiar sort of luster. However, they are getting better all the time. I don't see any foul here, just my opinion.
I also buy from this seller from time to time mainly Morgan and Peace dollars and he's always been spot on with his descriptions and that's what I like about it you know he's fairdinkem regards Harry
Thanks for the opinion it's scary how good they're getting , and they are making everykind of coin you can imagine , they;re not the cast fakes of before but stamped coins , some on 90% silver planchets , It's when I see 4 coins that look almost identicle , it gets me to thinking fake . I guess when you're buying off the internet you have to be careful , I'm new to E-bay so I don't know any sellers and until I do I'll ask questions . rzage
Crap... Sorry man, I got right on here after waking up and misread it. I appreciate the compliment then. I think when it comes to sellers like Vette who deal in large quanities, every so often a fake or cleaned coin is bound to slip in.
No problem, Steve. In this medium, where I can't communicate inflection or tone or gesture very well, I can see how my comments might have been interpreted differently from what I intended. I'll be more careful in the future.
I've bought coins from vette before and must say his coins are much nicer in hand than the image he posts Mike
