I've owned several Diadumenians, one from Frank being a fake & the other I parted with one last year for various reasons. So I have been looking for a replacement and this was added to Aegean. I quickly snatched it. This one looks to be a keeper for many years to come. And I like it's Circ Cam look, which I am always a fan of, as is @lordmarcovan Diadumenian (217 - 218 A.D.) AR Tetradrachm CYRRHESTICA, Cyrrhus O: AVT K M ΟΠЄ ANTΩNINOC, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right. R: Δ[HMAP]X ЄΞ VΠATOC, eagle standing facing on filleted thyrsus, head left, with wings spread, holding wreath in beak. 13.16g 26mm Prieur 923; Bellinger 127 Ex. Savoca Coins London, Monthly London Auction #4, Lot 643, 1/12/2020 Pending Wildwinds Publishing
I’ve been LOVING savocas London Black auction’s! Wonderful DaDudeMan! Mine is much more pedestrian: Diadumenian, Caesar (217-218) Ae 17, Moesia Inferior, Marcianopolis. D/Bust swamped R/Crescent Lunar and stele. BMC 3/41 Varbanov 1320 Ae G 3.44 • Glossy green
Eagle head Right ? Don't know what Circ Cam is Draped/ cuirassed bust seen from behind ? Come on Doug, fes up.
Mat, Congratulations on your latest score ! Prieur cites only 5 examples of this rare coin. BTW, your coin looks like an obverse die match to the example Prieur illustrates .
Very nice... and if I'm not mistaken, the Diadumenian tets beginning with Autokrator were minted during the single month that he was promoted to Augustus?
The obverse is not clear to me but the reverse legend is clearly not Marcianopolis. Rotating the reverse 90 degrees to the left will help. This is my Septimius of similar reverse with legend stopping at IC while the OP ends ICTPO. I can not make out the obverse but it definitely is not Septimius.
The confusion is mine @dougsmit, I didnt understand that you were referring to the coin @Ryro posted. My apologies & yes, you are correct.
I didn’t realize the question was my direction either. I will have to pull the coin out after bedtime and take a closer look. Admittedly, I too often take the attribution of the sellers. Thanks for pointing this out @dougsmit. Your attention to detail is always appreciated. I’ll get back to you guys with an answer.
I don't know how I missed seeing the MAT coin but did see the Ryro one. Sorry for the confusion. " Bust swamped R/Crescent Lunar and stele. BMC 3/41 Varbanov 1320 Ae G 3.44 • Glossy green Now, what we've got here is a failure to coinmunicate." I know I am grouchy but what is a swamped bust? I can assume that Lunar and stele is moon and star in the language from which this was cut/pasted. I have no idea what language uses English 'Crescent' & 'and' but not the other words.
Great question! As mentioned, I was using the sellers (very incorrect) ID. (turns out mine is Caracalla). I assume they were not English as a first language and the "swamped bust" is either noting the poor shape or the dent in it. I appreciate your patience as I learn.
