I heard the distinctive "Ping" at the drugstore this afternoon when I recieved my change. Looked down at the shiny coin. Looked at the reeded edge, no cupronicklel, or what ever the devil is sandwiched in clads. A nice 1964D quarter. Yeah, I asked for change for a couple of dollars.....young girl said they couldn't spare it. Flashed the coin and got a blank stare. Still very lucky.
Good find. I check our little concession change all the time - yesterday I got a 1946-D roosevelt dime. Cool - first silver coin in I do not know how long.
Nice, silver is hard to come by in circ. Only had luck once, lol, and it was a 61 quarter I believe. I haven't had luck after that with finding any silver after that. Congrats! :thumb: Phoenix
How's this for luck. If you haven't seen this post yet. (not my coins) http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=41031 Bruce
It's been over 15 years since I received silver in change... I still remember it: the night of my Computer Science final that I didn't feel prepared for. The pop machine spit it out: a shiny 1955 dime. I'm still waiting for the follow up. ...I get nickels from the 50s and 60s all the time... feh... I however did get a silver certificate in change from a bank about 4 years ago... I should have given it back and demanded silver coinage... "LOOK! It says PAYABLE TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND!!!"
Silver coinage is getting REALLY hard to find in circulation. I still find a few 40% halves if I roll hunt. But you can't really expect to make any money after you factor in your time and gas.
Agreed. I get 1965-70 quarters and dimes in change all the time. But that's the cutoff. It's easy to see that vast quantities of change have been sorted by the public and probably banks, and the silver ones weeded out long ago.
The thrill of the chase Indeed why not you Spock. A few months back I posted the sixty odd silver quarters I have found in circulation. It's been a twenty or thirty year search for starts. My bride empties pay washing machines as part of her job. It's not unusual for her to have $1000 in quarters several times a month. I use the copper reeded edge method when searching. Canadian coins raise your hopes then disappoint. Friendly bank tellers help me out. I peek at their coin trays and ask for anything that looks promising. I don't mind a pocket full of change. It's spendable after all. Lastly it's just luck. The last quarter I posted came from a CVS drug store. I never expected to capture a silver in such a busy place. Another collecter has a theory. The economy stinks, gas, prescriptions and groceries are expensive. Folks grab a Whitman folder or piggy bank and spend change that's been sitting for years. I've noticed lines at Coin Star machines lately. Are folks really cashing in collections? Quite possibly.
