I have never seen a complete cloth strike through where the date was visible on a cent (1968-D). Glad I had the opportunity to snag it.

I have never fully understood how these occur. Perhaps a die was being wiped clean and the mint worker forgot and left his cleaning cloth in the die? Cool piece though.

I read that the cloths used to wipe down machinery gets snagged. When the worker pulls on it hard enough it tears into small pieces. But I'm not totally sure about that.

(Or it could be an intentional made error at the mint)

It looks like it could be part of a canvas bag. ~ Chris

It looks like the cloth may have been bunched up.

That would make sense of what I am seeing. Maybe what I am seeing is a crease in the canvas when it was struck.

Aw crap! I recently found a half dollar that resembled this cent. Parallel wavy lines over the obverse. I couldn't explain it away and assumed it was planchet striations even thought the lines were thick. Kept if for a few days, and I'm pretty sure I tossed it back. :banhappy: Wish I knew then what I know now!

It's a great error and one worthy of paying a premium to add to your collection.
