Well, I finally got around to putting a Kleenex over my Kennedy halfs. I thought to myself, How is this going to show which are the silver ones, because you can't hardly see thru them, but to my amazment the silver one's looked white thru the tissue...Thanks guy's for giving me that trick.
For the Kennedy's, why not just look at the date. Also, the drop test (listen for the sound) is much easier than the kleenex test. You can drop an entire stack of Kennedy's, and if even one is silver, you will hear it.
I don't think I am going to drop a silver Kennedy proof coin..In the 90's and 2000's they made both clad and silver kennedy's in proof. Both have S mint marks. You cannot tell the difference by just looking at them...
Look at the side of the coin , rim , if you see copper it's clad no copper it's silver . Of course this only works if they're out of their holders . rzage:smile:hatch::hammer:
Silver proofs will weigh more than the copper nickel proofs. If you can weigh them Silver proofs should weigh 11.50 gms whereas Cupro Nickel will weigh 11.34 gms.
I think I see OP's point. If the Proof is in a holder, then weight and rim may not be easily accessible, in which case the kleenex method becomes the quickest (and most harmless) method of choice. I'm so used to pulling my silver out of circulation that one more slight drop on a surface isn't going to hurt the coins value anymore. Usually I can hear the silver jingling and know where it's at before I even spot it.
