Good morning all. This coin was pulled from a roll of new quarters by my grand mother in 1961. I sent it off to PCGS about 10 years ago and it came back MS63 as a mint error 1961-D quarter on struck nickel. PCGS does not show other coins in this group nor does it show value. Seems the value is not certain as I see some with less detail of the original strike at high value and some better examples at a lesser value. Ideas on value?
First off Welcome to CT! Very cool overstrike. When you say others for sale do you mean different years or the same quarter over nickel? haven't searched. There are a few here that would have a good idea of the value. Tagging @Fred Weinberg Honestly the price will be determined by how many collectors that collect these and how many are willing to get into a bidding war. But I would imagine that it has a ceiling. These type of errors are what we call helped errors someone at the mint intentionally made them.
I was referring to other years but similar Washington silver quarters over Jefferson Nickels though there are few I have seen in my very limited search. I have seen the chart on Mint Error News.
This is an extreme example of what I have seen. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1941-DOUBL...rentrq:b079d9bd1700a4d21bb06b29ffe6e214|iid:1
Ouch. I would figure a mint error double denomination MS63 would be worth more than a coin of either denomination in a regular stamp MS67 but then again, I don't know the coin market.
It's a great error, one that you should keep and cherish due to the fact your grandmother found it. It was graded a 63 so that holds the value down but I agree with the $300-$400 range. A very nice error coin. Welcome to CT.
It's also worth what a serious mint error collector is willing to pay for it. The prices fluctuate. Maybe a bit more for Double Denomination.
You can ask for any price you want. For example the link you posted to ebay, that guy is being unreasonable, he is hoping that someone blindly pays his price.
I saw one on Sullivan Numismatics so I agree. He's selling one for $3,500.00 @EricT Price change.. $3000.00 - $3500.00
Thanks for the tag @furryfrog02 ! This is a very unique double error. I agree that it's worth more than $400, but I couldnt tell you how far it could go.
I really appreciate everyone’s input. Even at $3k, it’s not enough to make me want to let go of it as a family heirloom. I’m thinking a lot more research is warranted
