Hi all, here is a recent auction win. I had been looking for this type (at a decent price) for quite awhile. It's not as nice as Tiff's but I like it. Please post your Nero coinage that you are proud of. Nero (Augustus) Coin: Brass Sestertius NERO CLAVD CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP PP - Laureate head right, small globe at point of bust (early type) ANNONA AVGVSTI CERES, SC in ex. - Annona standing and Ceres seated, modius on altar between them, prow of ship behind. Both of those are great looking Neros! There is only one Nero in the FF/FFIVN collection and he is a bit rough but we really like it anyways! Nero AE21 Miletus, Ionia AD 54-68 Magistrate Ti. Damas. Obverse: CEBACTOC, laureate head right Reverse: EΠI TI ΔAMA MIΛHCIΩN downwards to left and right of Apollo standing right, holding bow and stag
Just putting the words "Nero" and "sestertius" together, you've automatically got my attention. Congrats. I've only owned two Neros.
..that's a nice coin...Nero's are i guess one of my top fav Roman emperor coins to collect ...and i still need a sestertius too....i have 5 to date.. .Nero Dupondius and group photo..

My only sestertius is not as nice as any of my minor bronzes but it is a sestertius. What I want is the sestertius of the Janus Temple type like my as.
Congratulations with a great coin, Gary. I wonder if he was trying to assure the citizens that bread was on its way here. Very nice reverse. If I was to collect only one emperor, I’d be leaning towards Nero. Nice to see the examples above. Are you going to try to clean the coin? Looks like it has potential. And I agree with Doug: The Janus temple reverse is a classic. There are some other nice reverses too. The Ostia reverse, for example. Or the emperor playing lyre.
Great pick up Gary, my favorite Nero Sestertius Nero. AD 54-68. Æ Sestertius (34mm, 21.62 g, 6h). Lugdunum (Lyon) mint. Struck circa AD 66. Laureate head left, globe at point of neck / Triumphal arch, showing the front, with a wreath hung across it, surmounted by the emperor in facing quadriga accompanied by Pax and Victory, flanked by two soldiers; statue of Mars in side niche; the faces and plinths of the arch are ornamented with elaborate reliefs. RIC I 500; WCN 452; Lyon 191. .
From what I've read, yes, Nero was telling the citizens of Rome not to worry about the food supply. As far as cleaning it, the patina seems somewhat thick. I'm not sure I want to mess with it.
Very nice Aussie. Here's my specimen: Nero (Augustus) Coin: Brass Sestertius NERO CLAVD CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP P P - Laureate head left SC - S C: View of triumphal arch, showing front and left hand side; above, the Emperor in a quadriga escorted by Victory; arch is heavily ornamented and decorated with statues of Pax, Mars and two soldiers Exergue: Mint: Rome (circa 64 AD) Wt./Size/Axis: 25.29g / 35.4mm / 6h Rarity: Common References: RIC I 144 WCN 134 Provenances: From the collection of a Texas Wine Doctor. purchased from Paul Rynearson, 30 September 1991 Classical Numismatic Group, Inc. It's Nero, but not a sestertius. Just a cheap copper coin that for the life of me I can't find the attribution for, but I have it here somewhere. It's the only ancient coin I have, because I thought I wouldn't have to explain to any visitors who Nero was - everyone's heard of him. I don't even particularly want it (I hate Nero), and I really should save up and get a nicer coin and just decide to explain the emperor if I have to, but this is what I have for now. (EDIT: I found the attribution) Nero AE As, Lyons mint. 66 AD. IMP NERO CAESAR AVG P MAX TR P PP, bare head right, globe at point of bust / S-C to left and right of Victory flying left, holding shield inscribed SPQR. RIC 543; BMC 381; WCN 593; Cohen 302
