Howdy fellow coin peeps, I have a coin I cannot find any information on. A good friend believes it's Portuguese, because of the legend on the reverse - In Hoc Signo Vinces (Latin for "in this sign thou shalt conquer" or "in this sign you will conquer"). I would appreciate any information about this coin, since I cannot find anything on it. :headbang: Ribbit Ps: It weighs 3 grams and is 21mm in diameter.
While I cannot find any referrence for the coin, process of elimination can work for us here. It's definitely not Spanish, that much I know. The coin has Philip on the obv, only Philip it could be is Philip I because the II & III had no such coin. Yes, In Hoc Signo Vinces was a motto of Portugese royalty and that is a Portugese cross on the reverse if I've ever seen one. Therefore the coin has to have been issued by Philip I 1581-98. One problem, that does not look like a hammered coin.
I am wondering if it it is some kind of Jeton or Medal? Something honoring Phillip I or maybe Spain's acquisition of Portugal, since I believe that was during Phillip I's reign? Ribbit
Philip I of Portugal was Philip II of Spain - both at the same time. But you might be right about the jeton, still have the issue of that looking like a milled coin though. Milled coinage did not even begin until long after Philip died.
One thing about it is it was purchased about 10 years ago in Spain by someone from the UK. I bought it from him. I bought it because I couldn't figure out what it was and that pee'd me off, so I bought it so I could continue to research it to figure out what it is. Also, the previous owner took it to the British Museum and they counldn't figure out what it was either. Maybe it's some kind of local coin, similar to local coinage in Mexico, around the end of the 18th to beginning of the 19th century? And as to it being milled, it isn't dated that I can tell so it's probably in honor of Phillip and made well after his time but not too recent. I may have to find someone in Spain or Portugal that knows their local coinage well and they might know what this is? Don't we have a resident Portuguese member? Ribbit
I found something similar: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=230882&AucID=175&Lot=149 It looks like we are getting closer to figuring out what it is. Ribbit
Here's better pics: It does appear to be gold and here are the specs: Weight - 3.1 grams Diameter - 21mm Reverse Legend - IN HOC SIGNO VINCES Obverse Legend - partially unreadable (PHILLIP * REX * ????) Ribbit
Does anyone have software that can translate a PDF file from Croatian to English? http://hrcak.srce.hr/file/4210 My coin/token/round piece of copper was found at a archeological dig around an old church somewhere in Europe and is pictured in Plate #23 of the PDF document above but it's in Croatian. I would love to read the entire document since it's been suggested my coin may be a token of sorts and possibly associated with the Knights Templar. Ribbit Ps: That's the only one I've found so far and it confirms it's Henry II (later part of the 16th century) and Italian. :thumb:
