Hey I just found this Lincoln cent with the Denver Mint mark out of place. Is this a regular occurrence with memorials? when did they stop hand punching mint marks?
I wouldn't necessarily say the MM is misplaced. There was an area on each coin within which it was acceptable for a mintmark to be placed. As long as the MM was somewhere within that area it was OK. I don't know the exact year MMs were no long hand-punched into working dies but it was somewhere along the end of the '80s or early '90s. If I remember correctly the change was made over a period of years with some denominations making the change earlier than others.
o ok, I thought they stopped like.. at the start of the memorials or something. still a keeper in my books. thanks
The mint marks where placed directly on the dies in 1990 for the business strike cents and 1985 on the proof cents. Lou
