I did get a 40gram recharger, had it for 2 months now and it is not pink yet, yay! I need to get one of these humidity monitors.... Any ideas of where I can get a reasonably priced one that will do the job without being too fancy or too frugal? As far as the flips I wanted to use for world coins... i was thinking on whatever I could get a good deal on @ JP's market (say 1,000 at a time, if not more) so i get the wholesale price, include inserts, and make sure they are non-pvc.

So the air-tite albums are a no-go... what about the round coin holders they sell? I did take a look at Eagle, those seem nice but very pricey. I want something around 2x2 size, but slabbish like in the fact it will be solid, stable, well sealed and can use an insert for information (would like to do this with my peace & morgan silver dollars) as well as AU/BU's I have in franklin & commemorative halves. Still routing around for one that fits my middle road approach to functionality, price and investment.

    Air-tites verses Intercept

dprice7: I am glad you made this point. I was just reasoning this point out this week in my mind. If you have an Air-tite and you take it out of your safe to look at it won't the moisture "try" to get into the coin via pressure difference between air-tite and ambient air. Intercepts are less air-tite so are these better accordingly? If so GD, didn't you state you use mostly Air-tites? I have switched over several coins to Air-tites, but have this concern.:confused:

I know I sound like a broken record, but Eagle holders are excellent and have many advantages over other makes. I will concede, they do take longer to put together, but to me they are well worth the effort. I have been using them for over 20 years with zero ill effects and they are reusable unlike traditional 2x2s.

Air-Tite holders are not airtight, and in my opinion they are no more airtight than any other holder. That said, I used them for many years, my son continues to use them, and I have never had the problem you are concerned about.

dont take coins out of IS and put them in airtites. IS holders are the best there is period. and if you want even more protection get it slabbed put it in a double protection IS box get a decent dehumidifier system in place throw in desiccant and environmental controls and forget about it. alternatively you can send your coins to me and i will give them the vip treatment outlined plus most people will bump the grade by 2 points because its a spock coin :D

dprice7: I have my most expensive coins in PCGS/NGC slabs, but it is expensive to get them all slabbed, though I think I will slowly do this through PCGS. I put my raw IHC in Air-tites over the last couple weeks with the cardboard holders and boxes made by Air-tite, but I don't like them much. I think I will go back to IS 2x2's and put them back in IS boxes. I am sorry I can't give you my coins. I would have to come live with you as I like to look at the coins too much, and I don't really know you that well. I would also be difficult to explain to my wife and kids, though they do think I have lost my mind over coins. Getting them upgraded by association of your reputation might be worth it so maybe we could have some Spock regrading sleepovers and I would make lots of money on the upgrades. Mylar has proven long term performance

In my experience, Mylar has proven long term performance when used for storing coins. I would caution anyone from trying a different material unless there was some really compelling reason & it could be tested for long term archival storage using inexpensive coins.

My opinion is that stapled 2x2 cardboard with Mylar windows will work fine for lower cost coins. I have SEVERAL coins stored in them since the late 1960s with no adverse affects. Of course, I have seen spots & fingerprints grow since some coins had that contamination on them (40 years ago) when they were originally put in the 2x2s.

Also, hard plastic flips are good for long term archival storage in my opinion. I'm referring to storage where the coins are not being accessed all the time.

BTW, some of those low cost coins from 50 years ago are actually worth hundreds or thousands of dollars today & they are just fine in the old 2x2s.

To be honest, essentially all the 2x2 in my collection were replaced with new 2x2s in the early 1980s so that they all matched & have flattened staples.

I'm reading everyone’s comments about airtites & isoshields with interest. Any advice is welcomed.

    Very best regards,
