at the bank, walmart(sometimes), gas stations. Figure out what banks are ok with you getting a box. $25 cents $100 Nickels $250(i think Dimes, $500 halves. And go from there. I return to the same bank, so I mark searched rolls w/special symbol so not to duplicate searches.

I get it. do you simply buy them, go home and search them, then return them to the bank?

yeah, but some banks frown on bringing them back to the same ones or doing it too often. A nice world coin from the cheapie bin at a coinshop will usually make you a few friends at the bank. Coins with flowers for the ladies and warriors etc. for the guys. I like the string and son rolls as you can usually uncrimp one end, push out coins with a pen and then rewrap in the old roll. If you have a hard time obtaining, tell them U are having a garage sale or own a partystore or something for the first time. Calling ahead is usually helpful. Oh yeah, sometimes a bank only having a few halves is better than one that has many. I seem to find more silver that way. Good luck!

    Brainstorm and coin sources

On my daily walk through one or two of the local malls, I've always noticed that their fountain/wishing well filled up rather rapidly with about 90% pennies and the rest in nickels, dimes and an occasional quarter. About every three weeks they would clean the coins out and start over.

Today I stopped in at the office to find out what they do with the coins. They donate the money to charity but what happens to the actual coins is that they run them through a local CoinStar and send a check to the charity.

Since CoinStar currently takes 8.9% off the top, they (the mall and the charity) are actually losing money, so I made an offer to buy the coins at 100% face value. At this point they are considering my offer; I suppose they have to run it past their legal guys.

I don't know if it will be worthwhile searching through a bucket full of wet money but if I get them before someone else wraps them and takes them to the bank I would suppose the chances of finding something to save are slightly better.

There are three malls local to me. I'll have to check out the other two.

I'm also thinking that some of the larger grocery chains might have a few tons of change they might sell directly rather than haul it to the bank.

Other sources might be restaurants, churches, amusement parks, movie theaters, discount chain stores, etc. Any place that handles large amounts of change.

Get 'em before they get to the bank.

    Davidh,

I like your Wishing well idea. That is awesome. Wish I had a few near me. As far as grocery stores, and chain stores, that might be hard. As a lot of them receive bills and have to hand out change, meaning they have to go to the bank on a weekly basis if not more, just to buy change from the bank (at face value). I only know of chain stores as i was a manager and giving out change was a crime punishable by death . Churches may be more inclined as I am sure they get a lot of change in the offering plate.

    Just my two cents :smile

I would do that if there werent morons out there who throw coins into trash cans or throw them onto the ground. Just the other day I found a 1940S nickel on the ground at a gas station which had already been runover by a car. If I knew without a doubt that someone would find and appreciate them, I would easily release a few Buffalos and Liberty nickels out there into circulation. With all of these snobs out there though, that's not going to happen.

good point. I remember once a gas station here had about 20 silver quarters in the register, they werent nice but still. The guy though they were fake, I told him what they were and he gave me 5-6 as change. (couldnt get more lol, shoulda kept quiet) and people spend mercury dimes still too, so I guess most people dont even look.

I've thrown a few az quarters into a couple rolls but nothing moe then that
